The UAE’s flag was designed by a teenager in a single night

In 1971, a few months before the formation of the UAE, 19-year-old Abdullah Mohammad Al Maainah happened to see a newspaper ad announcing a contest for the best flag design.

There were only three days left before the deadline. Abdullah spent the entire night working on sketches, came up with six designs, and submitted them to the contest, which had over 1,000 participants.

When the shortlist was published in the newspapers, Abdullah didn’t recognize his design — the photos were black and white. He only realized that his design had been chosen when he saw the flag flying over the Mushrif Palace in Abu Dhabi.

The combination of red, green, black, and white reflects the pan-Arab colors found on the flags of many Arab countries. Here is their meaning:

• white — the generosity and good deeds of the country’s people,
• red — the sacrifices of ancestors to defend the homeland,
• green — growth and prosperity,
• black — strength, resilience, and courage.

Eventually, a teenager designed a flag that became a symbol of the nation.

How to become a volunteer in Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

The easiest way to get started is to join volunteer organizations.

volunteers.ae — the UAE’s main national volunteer platform. After registering, you can apply for volunteer programs. There are many options: environmental initiatives, blood drives, helping organize cultural events, and distributing meals to those in need.

emiratesrc.ae — volunteers participate in emergency response during crises and natural disasters. They welcome students and adults.

dubaicares.ae/volunteer — this organization works to provide access to quality education for children and youth.

maan.gov.ae/en — a community in Abu Dhabi recruits volunteers for charitable initiatives in education, healthcare, the environment, and social causes.

Volunteering in the UAE can help you obtain a Golden Visa. You must accumulate 500+ officially verified hours of volunteer work or make a significant financial contribution.

One month since the start of the conflict: how life in Dubai and Abu Dhabi has changed

We looked back to see what has changed in the UAE over the past month.

Security. The UAE’s air defense system has proven its effectiveness: 372 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles, and 1,826 drones were intercepted. City protection remains at the highest level.

Education. After the holidays, students switched to remote learning. The first to apply for a return to in-person classes was Taaleem, the largest private school network, which strengthened security measures across its campuses. It was followed by GEMS Education and Leams Education Group.

Work. The job market is changing — there have been layoffs, but also new opportunities for growth.

Groceries. Store shelves remain fully stocked, there is no shortage of food, prices are stable, and by the end of Ramadan, retail chains even offered discounts.

Real estate. Rumors of a 30% market crash have not been confirmed — there have been no sharp price fluctuations. Business activity has slowed, but this is a temporary phase.

Daily life. Cities continue to function. In Dubai Hills, families walk in the evenings, beaches are full, and traffic is gradually returning to normal levels, although tourism-focused businesses are facing challenges.

Today, it is clear: the UAE is coping well. Security systems are operating efficiently, urban life continues, and residents are gradually adapting to a new rhythm.

Dubai garbage worker returns gold worth AED 50,000

Imagine this: you arrive in Dubai for a wedding and bring a collection of gold with you. You place it on the table… and then it disappears. Three days later, Dubai police return the valuables and share the story of a sanitation worker.

This happened to Kamini Kannan, an Indian woman who came to the UAE for a family celebration — the story was reported by Times of India. She brought four gold coins and a 50-gram gold bar. Her son, while clearing the table, mistook the bag with the gold for trash and threw it away.

The story had a happy ending three days later.

A Dubai sanitation worker, while sorting waste, found the pouch with the gold. He didn’t even consider keeping the valuables — he immediately handed them over to the authorities.

Dubai Police, using waste tracking system data, traced where the “trash” came from and returned the gold to the family.

In Dubai, this isn’t a miracle — it’s a way of life. Crime rates are extremely low, and lost items are usually returned to their owners.

“We Chose This Country. We Stand with It” — Who Started the Message That United UAE Residents?

In the early days of the conflict, social media across the UAE was filled with posts carrying the message: “We chose this country. We stand with it.” The phrase was shared more than 10,000 times, but it was first written by Wissam Breidy, a Lebanese-born entrepreneur who has been living in Dubai for six years.

In an interview with Khaleej Times, Wissam explained that the now-viral phrase was originally part of a longer post from his personal account, where he reflected on the resilience of UAE residents:

“Most of us who came to Dubai did not come from comfort. We came from wars, from instability, from countries that taught us what uncertainty really means. We didn’t come here just to take from this country. We came because we believe in it, because we want to build something and be part of it. When moments get tense, we don’t panic. We align, we support each other, and we trust the leadership. We came here to build a better life. We came here because we believe in this country.”

The message was shaped by personal experience: Wissam, originally from Lebanon, spent 30 years of his life living through conflict.

At its core, the message is about unity, and judging by the overwhelming response on social media, many residents deeply resonate with that sentiment.

From 9:00 AM to 10:30 PM, a high-tone siren will signal alerts, while a standard message tone will indicate the all-clear.

From 10:30 PM to 9:00 AM, the standard tone will be used for both alerts and notifications.

Officials say the system remains fully operational to deliver timely safety alerts.
Residents are urged to follow official instructions whenever alerts are issued.

More Premium Schools to Be Built in Dubai

Due to population growth in the emirate, there is an increasing focus on education. Dubai Holding and the international network Nord Anglia Education have announced a partnership to develop premium-level schools (from kindergarten through Grade 12).

The first school is being built in Dubai Production City. It will follow the British curriculum and is designed for families living in nearby communities such as Jumeirah Golf Estates, Emirates Living, and Tilal Al Ghaf. Additional schools are planned in other Dubai Holding communities.

This news is a positive signal for the real estate market. It shows that Dubai is actively ensuring its infrastructure grows alongside its population, with a strong focus on creating a family-friendly environment.

Dubai welcomed 19.59 million international tourists in 2025

That’s 5% more than the previous year and marks the third consecutive record-breaking year for the emirate’s tourism sector.

The growth is driven by global partnerships, major events, and continuous investment in hospitality, infrastructure, and destination marketing.

The standout month of 2025 was December, when Dubai hosted 2.04 million visitors.

Dubai’s Crown Prince, Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, emphasized that these results are the outcome of Sheikh Mohammed’s strategy and the D33 economic agenda, which aims to double Dubai’s economy by 2033.
