All of Austria for about 3 euros a day: the KlimaTicket costs 1,095 euros a year and covers every train, tram and bus in the entire country – unlimited travel, one card.

Do this: add up what you'd spend on two or three weekend trips plus your daily commute. If you leave your city even twice a month, the ticket usually pays for itself.

Opening an Austrian bank account: most banks want two things – your passport and your Meldezettel, the address registration slip. Some also ask for proof of income. Online banks are quicker to open, but a local IBAN makes salary payments and contracts noticeably smoother.

Do this: sort out your Meldezettel first, then book the bank appointment – in that order, not the other way around.

Vienna sorts trash into 4+ bins – paper, plastic, glass and Restmüll each get their own. And for anything bulky there's the Mistplatz, the city's recycling center, free for households. Leaving old furniture on the street is not the system here.

Do this: look up your nearest Mistplatz before your first big clear-out and bring ID when you go – sorting on site goes much faster than you'd expect.

You have 3 working days.

That's the window to register your address in Austria after you move in. Not three weeks. Three working days.

What you need at the Meldeamt:
1. The Meldezettel form, signed by your landlord or main tenant
2. Your passport or ID
3. That's basically it — and it's free

Why it matters more than it sounds: the Meldezettel is the key that unlocks everything else. Bank account, health insurance, ID Austria, a residence document later. Every one of them asks for it first.

And if you move again inside Austria, the clock restarts. Same three days.

Everyone hears about Vienna's social housing and assumes they can just apply.

Usually not straight away. Access to city-owned flats typically requires a set period of continuous registered residence at the same address, plus income limits and other conditions. If you arrived this year, you're not in that pool yet.

But there's a second system that people miss: Genossenschaftswohnungen — housing cooperatives.

How they differ:
1. You pay a one-off contribution up front, which can run into five figures
2. Monthly costs are then usually well below the open market
3. A large part of that contribution comes back to you when you leave
4. Waiting lists exist, but the conditions are often less restrictive than for city flats

So it's a trade: capital now for a much cheaper decade. If you're planning to stay several years, it's worth getting on lists early — the clock starts when you register, not when you decide.

Austria is probably holding money that belongs to you, and most newcomers never ask for it.

Swipe: the refund most employees forget.

It is called Arbeitnehmerveranlagung, the employee tax assessment.
You can file for the last 5 years: in 2026 that still includes 2021.
Typical reasons you get money back: you did not work the full year, you changed jobs, or you had costs nobody deducted for you.
Commonly forgotten: Pendlerpauschale for commuting, work-related training, doctor, dentist and glasses bills, donations, and the Familienbonus Plus if you have kids.
Where: FinanzOnline, free, no tax advisor needed, roughly 20 minutes.
The refund lands on your account within a few weeks.

There is a 15,30 € monthly bill in Austria that has nothing to do with owning a TV.

Swipe before the letter lands in your postbox.

It is the ORF-Beitrag (the old GIS fee), around 15,30 € per month.
Since 2024 it is charged per household with a Hauptwohnsitz, not per device.
No TV, no radio, only Netflix on your laptop? You still pay.
One flat, one fee: flatmates and families pay once and split it, not one fee per person.
Low income or certain benefits? You can apply for a Befreiung (exemption) instead of just ignoring it.
Ignoring the letter is the expensive option: back payments and reminder fees add up fast.

Your foreign driving licence has a hidden expiry date in Austria: 6 months.

Swipe before that countdown catches you.

EU/EEA licence: you can keep driving on it, no swap needed.
Non-EU licence: valid only 6 months after you register your Hauptwohnsitz (yes, the Meldezettel starts the clock).
After that you need the Umschreibung at the Führerscheinstelle (BH or Magistrat).
Bring: your old licence, passport, Meldezettel, a passport photo, medical check.
Some countries require a practical driving test first, so book in month 4, not month 6.
Driving on an expired-for-Austria licence counts as driving without a licence.

Save this before your 6 months are up.
