When Rhan’z Barn & Thistle Doon Highlands take on Scotland… this is the kind of day we came for! 🐮🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇦🇺

Today Grant and I, along with our besties and fellow Highland breeders Kristi and Mike from Thistle Doon Highland Cattle, travelled four hours to visit Iain and Sheena at Killochries Fold — and WOW, what an experience!

Considering we contacted them on such short notice, we honestly cannot thank them enough for opening their farm to us and giving us so much of their time. ❤️

Coffee first (obviously 😂) while we talked all things Highland genetics, semen, embryos and the red tape regarding getting embryos into Australia… then Iain took us out around the farm.

And when I say Highlands… SO. MANY. HIGHLANDS. 😂

Around 150 beautiful hairy coos spread across the paddocks, including the very impressive Calum and Lord Ranald, plus some of the young bulls Iain is preparing to send to auction.

Mike even got to give Lord Ranald a scratch… until Lord Ranald decided Iain’s Land Rover looked like a much better scratching post. 😂😂

But one of the biggest things we took away from today wasn’t just the cattle — it was Iain’s passion and knowledge around regenerative farming.

Seeing the difference between grazed and rested pasture and hearing how he manages his land, soil and pasture absolutely blew our minds. We spent hours driving around with him asking a million questions, and we’ve come away absolutely buzzing about what we could potentially adapt and try back home in Western Australia. 🌱

Then, just when we thought they couldn’t possibly be any more welcoming, we got back to the house and Sheena had made us homemade pumpkin soup for lunch. 🥹❤️

We went there hoping to meet another Highland breeder, see some beautiful cattle and hopefully learn a thing or two…

We left five hours later with our heads full of ideas and feeling like we’d made two wonderful new friends.

Iain & Sheena, thank you so much for your time, knowledge and incredible hospitality. This will definitely be one of the highlights of our Scotland trip. ❤️

Now to work out how the hell we grow grass like that in Western Australia.

Morvich, Scotland 🏔️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Yesterday was one of those days where we didn’t need to be rushing off to see the next thing. We got to just slow down, have a few drinks, wander around and take in this incredible view. ❤️

Mountains all around us, the river running past, a few animals to make friends with along the way 😂 and of course the best company.

We’ve packed so much into this trip already that it was actually bloody nice to just stop and enjoy being in Scotland for a while. 🥰

The Fairy Pools, Isle of Skye 🧚‍♀️✨🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Well… we did it!! 😂 We walked the trail through the Fairy Pools with the incredible Cuillin Mountains surrounding us, and WOW, what a beautiful place. 😍

I walk backwards and forwards doing tours at home every day, but apparently Bullsbrook has not prepared me for Scottish hills 🤣🤣 This was definitely a workout for me, but bloody hell was it worth it!

Crystal-clear mountain water, waterfalls and scenery that honestly doesn’t even look real. Scotland just keeps blowing me away. ❤️

And of course I had to put my face in the freezing Fairy Pool water 🥶😂 Legend has it that the fairy waters are associated with beauty, youth and a little good fortune… so obviously I wasn’t taking any chances! 🧚‍♀️✨

I can confirm the water is BLOODY freezing, but after walking all that way there was no chance I wasn’t doing it! 😂

My legs might disagree with me tomorrow, but this was absolutely worth every step. Another incredible memory from our Scottish adventure. ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

P.S. I’ll let you all know if I wake up looking 21 tomorrow. 🤣🧚‍♀️✨

When you miss a turn on the way to Skye and accidentally end up in a beautiful little seaside town off the beaten track… only to realise it’s Lochcarron — the place where the tartan used in the bags Kristi and I made in Edinburgh was woven! 🥹🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿❤️

We had absolutely no idea we were coming here and had to backtrack to get ourselves going the right way again 😂 but what a bloody good wrong turn!

Even better, we found the cutest little café — lemon muffin for me and sultana scones for Kristi 😋

Sometimes the wrong turn takes you exactly where you’re meant to be. 🥰

Culloden 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿❤️

Today was one of those days where history really came to life for me. After watching Outlander a few times 😂 I already knew the story of Culloden, but actually standing on the battlefield, walking amongst the clan graves, visiting the museum and learning what these men went through was something else entirely.

This is Leanach Cottage, on the battlefield where the Battle of Culloden took place on 16 April 1746. A cottage stood here at the time of the battle and the site is connected with the care of wounded Government soldiers. The beautiful roof is still traditionally thatched using heather from Culloden Moor.

The battle itself was over frighteningly quickly, but what happened here changed Scotland forever.

Absolutely loved today. The more I learn about Scotland and its history, the more I fall in love with this place. ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
