Everybody meet Curly Sue, our blue Orpington pullet. 💙
Beautiful isn't she?
Well, fun fact, she would also have been an immediate cull for 95% of other breeders.
Can you spot why?
📌 *Hint: Her namesake has something to do with it.
...............
If you guessed curled, crooked or bent toes, you're correct! 🔀
Curly Sue was in lockdown during, what would end up being, one of the hottest spontaneous heatwaves of 2025;
We lost hundreds of eggs due to them being boiled, as the incubators couldn't regulate their temps in week-long 45 degree freak weather. 💔
Somehow, Curly Sue made it out alive, but her little feet took the brunt of the temperature fluctuations.
We tried the stretches, the splints, the kinetic tape, the boots, but to no avail.
But she was happy & healthy & able to hold her own, so we decided to honour her sheer will & determination, & see how she progressed. 🤞🏼
As you can see by the photos, she progressed to the point of a perfectly proper puffball! 😂
Even though her feet are not a genetic defect, I have made the decision to not breed from Curly Sue.
I feel that her leg/foot strength *may* be a disadvantage for her come breeding season (as both of our Orpington boys are BIG in size), & she *may* not be able to either support herself, or get away safely from being mated with.
So instead, she will live out her days here on the farm, in our 'Show Pen', where the other girls we aren't breeding from are penned. 🩵
🫵🏼 Do you have a chicken in your flock who's a little different, unique, quirky, or would have been a cull to somebody else? 🐥
We'd love to see photos of them, & hear their story in the comments! 🥹
