As we pause to remember and reflect this ANZAC Day long weekend, CCVAS (Coffs Combined Veterinary Afterhours Emergency Service) will be providing emergency on‑call veterinary care after hours for clients of our member clinics.

We hope it’s a safe and relaxing weekend for everyone — including your pets! A few practical tips to help keep them out of trouble:

✅ Watch the treats – Keep chocolate, fatty foods, cooked bones and alcohol well out of reach.

✅ Mind the noise – Loud sounds and gatherings can stress some pets. Make sure they have a quiet, secure space to retreat to.

✅ Secure gates & fences – Visitors and busy homes mean more chances for pets to escape.

✅ Heat & hydration – Even mild autumn days can be dehydrating. Provide fresh water and shade at all times.

✅ Travel smart – If you’re heading away, ensure pets are safely restrained and never left in cars.

With Easter just around the corner, it’s a lovely time to relax with family — but it can also bring some hidden risks for our pets.

🐾 Easter pet safety reminders:

🍫 Chocolate & hot cross buns are toxic to dogs — keep all treats well out of reach
🐰 Easter eggs, foil and small toys can cause dangerous gut blockages if swallowed
🦴 Fatty foods, bones & leftovers can lead to pancreatitis or bowel issues
🌿 Lilies are extremely toxic to cats — avoid them in homes with cats
🚪 Guests & visitors increase the risk of pets escaping — double‑check gates and doors
⛱️ Heat & long weekends away — ensure pets have shade, water, and someone checking on them

The festive season is a time for joy, but we know accidents and emergencies can happen when you least expect them.

Coffs Combined Veterinary After Hours Emergency Service (CCVAS) is here to provide emergency after-hours care for your pets throughout Christmas and New Year.

Holiday Pet Safety Tips:

✅ Keep chocolate and sweets out of reach – they can be toxic to pets.
✅ Avoid giving bones or fatty leftovers – these can cause serious digestive issues.
✅ Secure decorations and electrical cords – curious pets can chew or swallow them.
✅ Watch out for heat stress – provide plenty of water and shade during summer celebrations and don't exercise your pet in the heat of the day.
✅ Fireworks alert – keep pets indoors and create a calm space to reduce anxiety.

🚨 Is It an Emergency? Know When to Call CCVAS 🚨
We understand it can be hard to tell when your pet needs urgent care. Here are a few examples of true veterinary emergencies:

✅ Difficulty breathing
✅ Severe bleeding or trauma
✅ Inability to stand or walk
✅ Suspected poisoning
✅ Seizures
✅ Rapid deterioration in health

If you're unsure, it's okay to call — but please remember, CCVAS is for legitimate emergencies only. Misuse can delay care for animals in critical need.
