In a stunning victory for wildlife conservation, a rare northern quoll has been "rediscovered" at the Piccaninny Plains Wildlife Sanctuary in Australia. The small, spotted marsupial was captured on a trail camera positioned on a remote rocky outcrop—a location scientists hadn't formally surveyed in decades. This sighting is the first time the species has been confirmed in the sanctuary in nearly 80 years, offering a glimmer of hope for a creature that many feared had been permanently wiped out from the region by feral predators. 🐨📸

The northern quoll is an essential nocturnal predator, but its population has plummeted across the continent due to the spread of toxic cane toads and habitat loss. Biologists at the Australian Wildlife Conservancy credit the discovery to a "hunch" and persistent monitoring. The fact that this individual was found in such a healthy state suggests that targeted fire management and feral cat control are successfully creating safe havens for Australia's most threatened mammals. This breakthrough reminds us that even in the face of extinction, nature is remarkably resilient when given a protected space to thrive. ✨

Crows Nest Environmental Ltd have again been fortunate to be one of the recipients of Environmental Grant funding through the Toowoomba Regional Council.
With the funds received from Toowoomba Regional Council, Crows Nest Environmental have been supported in undertaking ongoing w**d management, erosion control, revegetation, and track stabilisation to support and protect existing plant communities and maintain emergency vehicle access.
Steve Plant (Plant Land Management Service) has been instrumental in the development and ongoing maintenance of the walking tracks through Dingo Mountain. This important work assists in ensuring the safety of those that access this environmentally signifcant landscape.
Without the financial assistance of the Toowoomba Regional Council, this important work would not be possible.

Eco-Friendly Development

A new boutique housing estate, which has been called an ‘exemplar’ of eco-friendly development, could offer an insight into how housing is delivered in sensitive areas. We appreciate the effort the developer has gone to preserve important habitat and place covenants over intact areas to protect them into perpetuity. In the context of no current tree protections being in place this is a move in the right direction.

We do, however, prefer developments that are placed in the great abundance of land that is already cleared or require as little clearing as possible and that it is made a priority to protect and connect existing habitat.

We hope that the tree protections brought in under the new planning scheme would recognise the importance of protecting existing intact habitat and focus on making efficient use of already cleared land when zoning new areas for development.
