It looks like the housing tide may finally be turning.

In an article by Lydia Kellner, Journalist, a long-standing housing drought in a key regional centre appears to be on the brink of breaking — with developers circling a significant parcel that could deliver more than 30 new homes.

The land is being offered with two professionally drafted concept plans already prepared, outlining allotments ranging from just over 500m2. After more than a decade without a major residential estate approval, this proposal is being described as a potential turning point amid Australia’s deepening housing crisis.

Local agent Greg Cram says the region is “crying out” for housing, pointing to virtually non-existent rental supply and years of restricted building activity. “People are giving up on building,” he said. “They can’t find land — and even when they do, it can take two to three years to get through council approval.” He added that while strong inquiry is already evident, the real test will be whether council planning frameworks are “progressive and accepting” enough to unlock much-needed supply.

Research cited in the article shows that while 2831 homes were approved across the broader region in the past 24 months, just five were approved in this particular centre — even as prices have surged in recent years.

After years of stagnation, momentum appears to be building.

2026 is a milestone year I’ll always hold close.

It marks 50 years since my stepfather, Dr Max Hankin, and our family founded Hankin Estate Wines near Nagambie in 1976, and 25 years since I started Stockman Wines—a journey born from family, grit, and a love of winemaking.
�Along the way, life took me from Australia’s first ever Indian-born winemaker, to service in the Royal Australian Navy during the First Gulf War, to Air Traffic Control overseas, business ownership, and later serving our community as a Nillumbik Shire Councillor.
