Alpacas are amazing creatures. In the last 80 hours, we've had two very different births.
Brown Boy 1 was found in the field, barely alive and under 5kg. Despite showing no signs of pregnancy, his mother gave birth overnight. Thanks to my amazing 83-year-old mother's incredible determination and the dedication of Dr. Marcus from Kenilworth Veterinary Surgery, this cria, who was too weak to raise its head or stand to suckle, gained strength through 48 hours of forced tube feeding. This allowed him to stand and bond with his mother, and he has not looked back since.
Brown Boy 2 was born trouble-free today, 5 days early. He was standing and suckling within an hour, weighing over 7kg.
It's been a incredible learning experience for a first-season breeder
