Torquay's warmest streets are about to get a lot more shade.

Surf Coast Shire has planted more than 160 new trees across Old Torquay this year, targeting the streets that heat-mapping showed were running hottest: Payne, Boston, Pearl, Bristol, Price, Zeally Bay, Pride and Cliff Streets. Pride Street alone had 35 aging median trees replaced with 50 new ones, with a two-year watering and maintenance plan to actually get them established.

It's the kind of change that's easy to miss street by street and obvious once you notice it. Worth a look next time you're walking through Old Torquay.

A $237 million road commitment just became one of the bigger property stories on the Bellarine.

The state government has promised stage one of the long-awaited Bellarine Link, a dual carriageway between Surf Coast Highway and Barwon Heads Road, alongside a $57 million upgrade to Murradoc Road, with construction planned to start next year if the government's re-elected. Premier Ben Carroll pointed to population growth toward half a million people on the Bellarine by 2050 as the reason it's needed now.

Sandra Gatehouse from the Combined Bellarine Community Association put it plainly: the region has "been waiting for the Bellarine Link for a long time."

Infrastructure like this is exactly the kind of thing that quietly reshapes what a suburb is worth, and how it feels to live there, years before anyone notices the change. Worth watching if you've got property anywhere between Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads.

Next weekend, Anglesea Community Hub turns into a showcase of everything growing on your own doorstep.

The ANGAIR Wildflower and Arts Show runs 19–20 September, pairing more than 200 native flora varieties, all endemic to the Anglesea, Aireys Inlet and Surf Coast bushland, with local art and photography. There are bushland bus tours running across the weekend, and an Indigenous plant sale if you want to take some of it home.

It's run entirely by ANGAIR, the volunteer group that spends the rest of the year actually looking after that bushland, including, this week, marshalling checkpoints for the Surf Coast Century.

Worth the drive to Anglesea even if you've never thought about wildflowers in your life.

Torquay Netball Club's head coach is stepping up to the top level of the sport.

Madi Browne, a 61-Test Australian Diamond and 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, has spent the past two years rebuilding Torquay's senior program and junior pathways as head coach. From 2027 she's taking an assistant coaching role with the Sunshine Coast Lightning in Super Netball.

Club president Michael Gibson: "We're incredibly proud that she gets this opportunity to take the next step in her coaching journey."

A genuinely elite coach chose to spend two years building something at a local club before heading back to the top level. Worth knowing next time you're driving past the courts.

South Geelong is quietly the fastest-moving pocket of the Geelong market right now.

Median house prices there moved +9.2% in a single quarter. The strongest shift of any Geelong sub-area we track. Behind Geelong's first marathon is a genuinely local fundraising push.

The Geelong Running Festival has partnered with more than a dozen local charities, including Give Where You Live, Rivers Gift, The Shaka Project, Leisure Networks, Type 1 Foundation, Don't Forget My Pet and Zoe's Fight, aiming to raise $250,000 in the festival's first year.

Festival ambassador Kathleen Whitehead, who's running the full marathon herself, put it simply: "Showing up is what matters, whether it's at the start line or on the sidelines. You don't need to be an elite runner to experience the excitement of race day."

If there's a cause on that list you already care about, this is a reason to get behind it on 20 September.

Geelong's waterfront has a new building worth knowing about.

Nyaal Banyul, the city's new convention and event centre, opened in July on Western Beach Road: a 1,000-seat theatre, more than 3,700 square metres of event space, and a facade built from over 25,000 custom ceramic tiles shaped around the old Western Beach cliffs. Around 80 conferences were already booked in before the doors opened.

It's also the first convention centre in Australia designed from the ground up in partnership with its Traditional Owners, in this case the Wadawurrung. Walk past the western side and look up, there's an 88-metre mural by the artist Rone, made up of 14 local faces.

Worth a look next time you're down at the waterfront.
