The concept of leverage has always fascinated me, and so began my investment journey in property —— buying my first home at 23, and a year later buying the house across the street as my first investment property.

As a late teen, I was introduced to the basics pretty quickly:

Buy quality assets.
Hold them.
Let time do the heavy lifting.

But here’s what I’ve learned since:

Knowing what to do and actually doing it consistently are two very different things.

What really elevated the game for me was having an accountability partner.

Someone who would challenge my thinking, and open me up to the possibility of investing in other asset classes, such as shares.

Someone who could question my decisions and call me out when I was tempted to veer off track. —— And make sure I was actually following through, instead of buying another pair of Louboutins.

For me, that person is Cara Brett - Money Expert , pictured here with me.

And I think this is one of the most underrated parts of building wealth.

We talk endlessly about strategies, markets, property, shares and money.

But rarely do we talk about who is in your corner.

The right person won’t just cheer you on.

They’ll challenge your excuses.

Expose your blind spots.

And hold you accountable to the decisions that will shape your future.

Because wealth isn’t built by what you know.

It’s built by what you consistently do.

Fight for it if you have to.

Because in 5 years, it will still be in demand.

In 10 years, people will still be fighting for it.

In 15 years, you’ll thank me that it paid off your mortgage.

One of the most expensive mistakes I see buyers make, is they compare properties by price, instead of comparing them by VALUE.

Two houses can both be $1.5 million.

One might be fairly priced.

The other might be an expensive mistake.

Price tells you what you’re paying, but Value tells you what you’re getting.

They’re not the same.

This is why simply knowing what similar properties have sold for isn’t enough.

You need to understand why those properties sold for what they did.
