RESILIENT HOMES PROGRAM

The Government and the Northern Rivers Reconstruction Corporations has announced its Resilient Homes Program to provide financial assistance to homeowners to improve the flood-resilience of residential properties in Lismore and the Northern Rivers.

The Resilient Homes Program will offer eligible homeowners one of the three available measures, based on expert property assessments, flood impact severity data, safety risks and potential future flood levels:

👉 Home buybacks – the homeowner receives a payment for the purchase of their house and land, or
👉 Home raising – funding is committed to elevate liveable areas above a property-specific flood level, or
👉 Home retrofit – funding is committed to retrofit and/or repair liveable areas to improve the resilience of these areas for future floods.

These investments will be complemented by Resilient Land Program.

The EOI buybacks, landswaps, relocatables need to be kick started today.

They need to be comprehensive, to include considerations of both physical and psychological safety.

It was a humanitarian disaster that caused much trauma.

Thank God for our locals.

The NSW Government has to respond to our need and sense of urgency.

"A petition to setup a Reconstruction Commission, similar to those after the Black Saturday Fires (2009 Victoria) and Cyclone Tracey.
We all know Council doesn't have the money or other resources to do whatever it is the people want and need done. It is my belief that we need a body organised and funded by Federal and State Government who can pull in the expertise this enormous problem needs and come up with real workable solutions."

Families with nowhere else to go are being forced to move back into their uninhabitable and/or condemned houses.

"Stories of residents living in unsafe housing follow revelations in Guardian Australia that motor homes intended for Lismore residents whose houses were inundated in the floods were lying empty because linen and water sources had not been organised, while housing “pods” promised by the NSW government were yet to materialise."

THE DEBATES ON FLOOD MITIGATION ARE FINISHED

Today we announced a $10 million flood mitigation study for the Wilson/Richmond River catchment. We also announced $75 million this year to NSW to fund the findings of such modelling and a further $150 million next year. For too long, previous Councils have debated the merits of flood mitigation. Today that debate is done. The CSIRO will do the modelling and their findings will be implemented.

This will include the whole catchment and all towns and villages within the catchment. For everyone who is against engineering solutions to flood mitigation, the debate is over. We will be doing engineering work for flood mitigation.
