A Melbourne maritime icon: the Malcolm Moore crane. Built in 1942, it was initially sent to Sydney to assist the Royal Navy during the WWII before returning to Seafarers in 1946, where it transformed manual cargo handling for decades.

Today, this last remaining electric crane from the pre-container era watches over a transformed riverfront.

Where ships once docked, you'll soon find the ground floor hospitality precinct of 1 Hotel & Homes Melbourne - the city's most anticipated sustainable luxury precinct.

A new chapter in Melbourne's riverfront story begins in 2025.

Designed by Nonda Katsalidis of Fender Katsalidis, Seafarers' striking architecture pays homage to its past while boldly shaping Melbourne's skyline. Inspired by its riverfront setting, the design beautifully integrates the industrial heritage of the site with the fluidity of the Yarra.

The structure features two distinct volumetric forms – the lower levels draw from the angular side panels of heritage-listed Goods Shed 5, while the upper levels reflect the ever-changing form of the water.

With the façade over halfway complete, Seafarers' visionary design is taking shape, blending history and modernity along Melbourne's riverfront.

Reaching new heights - Seafarers has now topped out at Level 18! Last week, we celebrated this monumental achievement during a topping out ceremony led by our dedicated builders, Icon.

It was a moment of reflection on the incredible journey to date, and a bubbling excitement for what lies ahead. As Icon transitions from structural works to the meticulous completion of the facade installation and interior fit-out, we're one step closer to completion.

Congratulations to all involved, including, Icon, Riverlee Group, Fender Katsalidis and WSP.

Breaking ground at Seafarers Rest Park! 🌿 After nearly fifty years of neglect and disuse, construction on Melbourne’s newest 3,500sqm riverfront public park is underway, forming the final piece of the Seafarers Precinct, and a key link in the City of Melbourne’s Greenline Project to rejuvenate the Birrarung-Yarra River.

This achievement is the result of a decade long vision to give back this once-forgotten stretch of Yarra River to the city. Connecting directly to 1 Hotel & Homes Melbourne, Seafarers Rest will be a vibrant green haven with expansive lawns, native plants, recreation areas for families, maritime artefacts, dog-friendly access, and a programmable events deck.

Last week, we celebrated this milestone at the Mission to Seafarers, joined by guests, Lord Mayor Sally Capp, Deputy Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece, and valued partners OCULUS and Icon, alongside Offshore and Specialist Ships Australia (OSSA), the custodians of the maritime artefacts going into the park.
