When I left IT and bought my first full time business, I didn’t have a blueprint.

Just grit, a Greek upbringing that taught me to save every cent… and a lot of late nights figuring things out the hard way.

No formal training. No business degree.

Just a handshake deal and the previous owner showing me the ropes.

At the time, I thought I was lucky.

He taught me how to open up, run the roster, manage the till, and where to order stock.

So I copied him. And now?

Now I look back and think—how stupid was I?

I heard someone say it and it opened up a whole new world of perspective that business owners don’t often realise.

You’ve found some templates online but you’re concerned that they’re a general contract which may not cover the specifics of your industry. I didn’t grow up learning how to build a business.

I grew up learning how to survive.

In my Greek household, money was sacred.

You worked hard, you saved, and you only spent if it gave you something back straight away.

So when I started running my own business, I carried that mindset with me.

Every dollar had to stretch. Every expense had to have an immediate return.

Things like employee handbooks, proper onboarding, or contracts that covered me in case of dismissal?

They felt like a waste.

Why spend money on something that might never happen?

I’d think:

“I’ll deal with it if it comes up.”

“We don’t have those problems now—why pay for it?”

“That money’s better off in the bank, just in case.”

But here’s the truth:

The problems DID come up.

And when they did, I wasn’t prepared.

I lost good staff because there was no clarity around their role or expectations.

I spent thousands in legal fees scrambling to protect myself after the fact.

And I paid double to get systems put in place in crisis mode after the fact—money, time, and stress I could’ve avoided.

The biggest mistake wasn’t that I didn’t care.

It was that I didn’t understand the value of protecting what I was building.

Because when you’re always in survival mode, you only see what’s right in front of you.
