🐀 Not every rat is a pest rat!

We were recently called to a Newcastle school after staff reported an unpleasant smell coming from around an outdoor area.

After some investigating, our technician located this deceased rodent tucked away behind some equipment.

Based on its physical characteristics, it appeared more consistent with a native rodent species than one of the introduced pest rats we commonly encounter.

This is what we discovered during a follow-up visit to a termite management job in Raymond Terrace.

Active termites had previously been located within the property, so we carried out a targeted foaming treatment to the affected areas.

When we returned to inspect the treated areas, we found this large accumulation of dead termites.

This is why follow-up inspections are so important. Treating the initial activity is one part of termite management — we also need to return, reassess the affected areas and check for any remaining or new activity.

This is what termite damage can look like once it has progressed far enough to break through the surface of a bathroom wall.

Unfortunately, the damage you can see is often only part of the story. Termites can travel and feed concealed inside wall cavities, subfloors and structural timbers long before obvious signs begin appearing inside the home.

That’s why regular termite inspections are so important — the aim is to identify termite activity before the damage gets to this stage.

From the outside, some sections still looked relatively normal. But underneath the surface, termites had been feeding on the timber and leaving it hollow inside — something that became very obvious with just a little pressure.

🐜 ACTIVE TERMITES IN A COMMERCIAL BUILDING

Active termites were recently discovered attacking the timber internal fit-out of this commercial property.

Although the main building is predominantly concrete, the internal walls and fit-out contain timber — providing termites with plenty to feed on once they gain access.

As part of the termite management program, we installed a termite bait station directly onto the area of active termite workings around this office door jamb.

The termites will continue feeding on the bait, with the station checked regularly and bait levels topped up approximately every couple of weeks as required until the termite colony has been eliminated.

This is a great example of why even concrete commercial buildings can still be vulnerable to termite attack.

Active termites were discovered in a tricky location behind shelving at this commercial property, requiring an above-ground termite bait station to be carefully installed directly over the area of activity.

The station has been loaded with termite bait and will be inspected and topped up every couple of weeks as required, continuing the process until the termite colony has been eliminated.

It’s another reminder that termite activity can remain hidden in areas you may rarely see or access.

👀 WHAT’S HIDING BEHIND YOUR WALLS?

Not everything we find during an inspection can be seen with the naked eye.

Thermal imaging is one of the tools we use to identify unusual temperature patterns that may warrant further investigation.

And these three inspections produced three very different findings…
