Found this one today on a routine job.
The main conductor had never been tightened into the breaker terminal. It had just been sitting in there, loose, for who knows how long. Every time the house drew decent load it was arcing and heating up. You can see what that did: burnt insulation, melted cable, copper gone green, and scorching on the breaker next to it.
This board looked fine from the outside. The owners had no idea. It's the sort of thing that ends with a house fire and nobody ever knowing why.
I'm not having a go at anyone. Good sparkies get rushed, get interrupted, and miss things on a long day. That's exactly why a second set of eyes is worth it. In every trade, the work that gets checked is the work you can trust. Your switchboard shouldn't be any different, even if you're confident in whoever did it.
If your board's been worked on, you've had solar or a battery put in, or it's just been a long time since anyone looked, get it checked. It's a quick job and it's cheap peace of mind.
Things to watch for:
A burning or hot plastic smell near the board
Breakers that feel warm
Lights flickering when big appliances kick in
Any discolouring or marks around the board
Sunshine Coast locals, happy to be that second set of eyes. Flick me a message.
