THE TEA TREES: The Avon Descent’s Living Maze

If you talk to any Avon Descent veteran about the most frustrating, mind-bending part of the race, they won't just tell you about the jagged rocks at Williamson Weir or the churning white water of the valley. They will tell you about The Tea Trees.

Positioned as the final major obstacle on Day 1 before racers can finally collapse at the Cobbler Pool campsite, this section of the river is a literal, living labyrinth.

Unlike permanent rock structures, the Tea Trees are a changing maze of living obstacles. They grow, shift, and react to the winter water levels every single year, meaning the exact route a competitor memorised during last year's race simply doesn't exist this year.

Why does this stretch take such a massive toll on both powerboats and paddlers?

Blind Navigation: First-time international competitors and seasoned locals alike describe it as a complete guessing game. There is no real way to "read the river" through the thick brush.

No Room for Error: The racing is so tight that a single mistake or clipping a branch can cost a team 30 seconds in a flash, instantly dropping them down the leaderboard.

The Point of No Return: Unpredictable water levels hide treacherous channels. If you get confused, you can easily be sucked down a wrong path from which there is often no return.

Conquering the Tea Trees demands absolute intuition, sharp reflexes, and pure grit to get through unscathed. It’s unpredictable, it’s exhausting, and it is exactly the kind of hardcore challenge that makes the 124-kilometre Avon Descent one of the greatest adventures on the planet!
