"A language is the soul of a nation. By preserving Hanifi Zuban, we preserve the history, identity, and future of the Rohingya people."
Hanifi Zuban: The Writing System of the Rohingya Language
This historical page highlights the importance of Hanifi Zuban, a writing system developed for the Rohingya language by Molvi Mohammad Hanif in the 1980s. His goal was to give the Rohingya people a unique and practical script that reflected their own language and identity.
Before Hanifi Zuban, Rohingya was written using different scripts, including Arabic, Urdu, and Latin alphabets. Molvi Mohammad Hanif created Hanifi Zuban to provide a standardized writing system that would help preserve the Rohingya language, culture, and history for future generations.
Hanifi Zuban has become an important symbol of Rohingya identity. Although many Rohingya still use other writing systems today, Hanifi Zuban is taught by some community organizations and language enthusiasts, and it has also been added to the Unicode Standard, making it possible to use digitally on computers and smartphones.
This page serves as a reminder of the efforts made by Rohingya scholars to preserve their language despite displacement, persecution, and many other hardships. Protecting the Rohingya language is an important part of preserving the community's culture, history, and identity.
