🍁 A Personal Goodbye to the Snowbirds

Living on the North Shore of Kempenfelt Bay has given me one of life’s quiet privileges — every June, for three days, the Canadian Snowbirds have graced our skies.

Friday is always my favourite. Practice day. Sitting on my balcony, the formation cuts through the air almost in silence. No crowd. No commentary. Just me and the Snowbirds getting ready for the weekend. It feels personal — like they’re putting on a private show just for this stretch of shoreline.

This year hits differently.

It’s the last Snowbirds display for the foreseeable future — and for me personally, it also marks 50 years of calling Canada home. Fifty years of being proud of this country. Fifty years of belonging to a nation generous enough to let a kid from Ireland plant roots and never look back.

I’ve been blessed to hold two homes in my heart — Ireland, where I was shaped, and Canada, where I built my life. Not many people get that. I don’t take it lightly.

So as the Snowbirds make their final passes this weekend, I’ll be watching from that balcony — grateful, a little nostalgic, and quietly proud.

When they return one day in a new form, I hope they carry the same spirit. Canada deserves nothing less. 🇨🇦

Coffee Talk Tuesday: Depending on current market conditions renovating your kitchen or getting a pool won't always result in getting your money back. The renovations that pay off in almost any market are the boring ones, like new shingles, windows, Furnace and water Heater. Glamour sells well on social and real estate web sites. However maintenance sells better on the market. What renovation are you planning that you think add value value?

Tuesday Coffee Talk: The house you can afford and the house you qualify for are two very different things. A lender will tell you the maximum. The reality is you should purchase at price that allows you to still sleep well, still take vacations, and still live within your means. What should matter more to you than size of the house is the quality of life inside it. Let me know if you agree this makes sense ?

Coffee Tuesday. Some people will use the equity in their home like an ATM. I've observed people refinance and pull equity for vacations, cars, and renovations that added zero value, then wonder why they're underwater when the market shifts. Equity withdrawn should be invested to increase its value, purchase more real estate (like now) or to invest into an RRSP or TFSA. This is passive and patient investing. It rewards the people who leave it to blossom.
What's the smartest financial decision you've made as a homeowner?

Tuesday Truth: You don't need 20% down to buy a home. That myth keeps people renting more than interest rate will. In Ontario a buyer can purchase with as little as 5% down . For many the real barrier to homeownership isn't what most people believe it is. Ask yourself, do you really know what it takes to buy a home?
