It’s still summer, but seasons change. Labour Day has come and gone. Temps this week have remained high and yes, it feels like summer. Even the lake is warmer! But seasons change. Restaurants are less busy, parking spots can be easily found and zipping through Port Carling takes no time at all.

Back to school makes a difference. It’s not that the leaves are turning or that nightfall is more of a thud than a prolonged event. It’s that the recreators have gone. Sure, some remain (and happily enjoy finding parking spaces available) but the hubbub of midsummer has become a languid stroll to a lakeside chair, followed by a quiet time to reflect (some call it a nap). The pace is slower and more relaxed.

September takes on the mellow fruitfulness as described by the poet John Keats

“ Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;”

It’s a special time. Our favourite, in fact. The season has changed, and that makes all the difference, whether on the lake or enjoying a reflective thought on the dock. Want to be enveloped? Try being here in September.

This September there’s lots to see in terms of property, too. The number of new listings makes it seem like spring! Take a look…

MarketWATCH Muskoka: 31 August 2023

Hard to realize the cool nights are not an aberration. Autumn is definitely creeping over the transom. Sunset cruises require an extra layer - especially if it’s a star gazing trip too. Even with all the lakeside activity and cottages lit up, stars in these parts outshine anything that can be seen in the GTA. The next few nights will be wonderful viewing. Constellations aglow, Venus on the rise and the super moon waning. There’s a story to tell.

The sky at night is never still. To co-opt a phrase ‘the scene never sleeps’.

And scenery? There’s a tree by our place that has completely turned a deep, burning red. Another is having trouble making up its mind; all green but one branch bright red, like a torch, lighting the way. These nights are perfect for warming by the fire (inside or outside). I think of it as marshmallow season … that sweet treat as a reward for a good summer.

But it’s not over. Merely changing the gears. As school starts, so does the fall season. And what a season appears to be in the offing! If any of this week’s listings (new or repriced) are an indicator, there’s lots to see. Check them out!

MarketWATCH Muskoka: 24 August 2023

At this stage of the season gears change. People are thinking about 'back to school' and for a short while, there's a respite in our cottage market. Another move is afoot too. This is the time of year where some leave cottaging for good. It's their last summer at the lake. Typically the cottages looking for new owners come to market in the weeks following Labour Day. Later September and early October are usually quite busy as properties which haven't sold this season reduce their prices as well as those new listings of family-cherished cottages coming to market.

If you didn't find the right place this season, then these coming weeks may be 'right' for you. In past years it has not been unusual to have 30% of the year's business take place between mid-September and the week after Thanksgiving. Stay close. Things can happen quickly.

Talking about things happening quickly, fall colours are beginning to dot the forest. It's as if some uppity tree has decided to flame out and catch everyone's attention. The forest is primarily green so those few stand outs are obvious. Not quite so obvious is the decline in bugs. This is a favourite time of year for us. Evenings on the dock are not interrupted with incoming mosquitos. The high whine of a pesky critter buzzing around is almost a thing of the past. It's a good time to enjoy cottage country.

There's a good selection of property to choose from this week. Maybe your dock is among them! Check out all the details at https://rosskoka.com/news/marketwatch

MarketWATCH Muskoka: 17 August 2023

The coming few days will be feeling more like July than August. Summer in these parts has been extended. Yet, if you check the canopy, the trees are not about to be fooled. They are preparing for the big show. A few have jumped the gun and tinges of orange and red can be seen from the roadside.

Take a stroll on a favourite trail. You’ll notice fewer bugs. A sure sign the season is running its course. For us, this is a favourite time of year. Warm days, cool nights and the water’s still warm! Lingering evenings on the dock are more pleasurable.

On the real estate side, listings continue to come to market. In the area we monitor 77 came to market. On the pricing side, properties which have not sold yet are revising their ask. There were 42 reductions this past week. On the sold side, 52 went conditional or pending. Activity is good.

Some of the listings are too. Take a look! Want more details? check out https://rosskoka.com/mw-081723

MarketWATCH Muskoka: 10 August 2023

On our property we have two fruit trees. Deer are indiscriminate. They eat whatever has fallen or they can reach. The red berries that gleam like cherries in the sun, are crabs. The others an old Ontario variety long forgotten. They’re on a tree planted when the original home was built here in the 1870’s or 80’s. It’s a variety that likely precedes McIntosh (which came into favour in the early part of the last century). Fresh ones are tart and crisp. They have snap.

They’re not nearly as pretty as the crabs but so much more satisfying. That’s because they have the characteristics we value... year after year.

Earlier I mentioned the deer are indiscriminate. Not quite true. When it comes to being shooed away, they quickly leave the pretty berries and scamper into the forest. But with the old apples? They stand their ground with a frown. It seems that taste matters.

It’s a bit like cottages. Make sure you have what you value. Don’t be swayed because it’s pretty. Know what you like and how you cottage.

This week’s crop has some tasty offerings. Take a look!
