Another is 0.5% rate increase just announced by the Bank of Canada earlier this morning.
Based on their statement after the announcement it does appear that they may be close to or already at the end of their rate increase cycle.

The Bank of Canada raised its benchmark interest rate for the 7th time this year, but gave its strongest indication yet that it may be nearing the end of the current cycle of rate hikes.

“Smith Financial Corp., the family holding company of First National Financial Corp. co-founder Stephen Smith, is offering C$44 a share for Canadian mortgage lender Home Capital Group Inc. “ …………Source Financial Post

So Big financial Group (Smart Money) is ready to get in to Home Capital (Mortgage Lender) $44 a share and Banks are working on workaround with sellers to avoid bankruptcies. There are distress sellers, but banks are giving them options and avoiding power of sales.
There are sellers out there who can hold property and distress sellers who have no option but to sell at discount at the same time there are lot of buyers willing to buy discounted properties and on top that there are 400K+ immigrants coming in 2023.People are asking to drop stress test it may/may not happen. Rental market is very strong
So, it does not seem that big crash is coming other than slow burn that is going on for last few months.
Few things that can cause sharp downturn is more aggressive rate hikes to control inflation and high rise in unemployment and/or recession. But recession if short lived will not have bigger impact.
Other risk to consider is mortgage renewals from B/C lender and private financing if they will buckle up or willing to bailout.
In the end volume of new listing, Sales volumes will matter and let us know where we are headed …!!

The Bank of Canada has increased interest rates by another 0 .75% this week.
There is tug of war going on between The Bank of Canada & Government with respect to inflation.
The Bank of Canada is trying to control inflation by increasing interest rates, but federal government continue to print more money & doing excessive spending causing inflation to rise.

Will the The Bank of Canada be able to successfully combat inflation through their monetary tightening policies by increasing interest rates?
Or will governments ultimately need to buckle to increasingly growing public outcries for even more subsidies, financial support such as CERB, which will require even higher rates of money printing and supply and exponentially rising inflation.
TIME WILL TELL !

There are no winners in this battle other than who own hard stable assets that perform well in boom and recessionary times.

The federal government should not cut spending to tamp down inflation, a new report from Desjardins argues, but economists say there is some action Ottawa could take.
