Control your emotions. They’ll make you money.
I got reminded of that today in a grocery store parking lot.
Stopped to grab a protein drink while heading out to do some real estate work.
As I’m backing into a parking spot, a grey Sentra starts backing up directly toward my truck.
I’m hanging out the window waving my arms.
Nothing.
No brakes.
No eye contact.
The car keeps coming.
Then somehow they stop.
Less than a sheet of paper from hitting my truck.
The driver pulls away completely oblivious.
Two bystanders couldn’t believe it.
One said, “I can’t believe how calm you stayed.”
The truth is, getting angry wasn’t going to change anything.
So I smiled and carried on.
We started chatting.
She noticed the fire department sticker on my truck.
“Are you a firefighter?”
“No, my wife is.”
Then she asked what I do.
I pointed to my shirt.
“Jon Alonzo. I sell homes.”
Her eyes lit up.
“I know the Alonzos.”
A few minutes later:
“I’m going to call you. I want to sell my place.”
Just like that.
People are always watching.
Not your social media.
You.
How you react.
How you treat people.
How you carry yourself when things don’t go your way.
I’m a man.
I hold doors.
I shake hands.
I say please and thank you.
I forgive.
Today that led to another opportunity.
No billboards.
No gimmicks.
Just a branded t-shirt, a pickup truck, and treating people right.
The old-school stuff still works.
