A century-old mansion, taking a turn.

Watch Vancouver’s 1912 Cypress Mansion rotate 90 degrees counterclockwise — a remarkable sight from our crew’s work at 3823 Cypress Street in 2024.

The project combined lateral movement and rotation to position the building on a new foundation within the existing site. Tight clearances required an approach designed around the mansion and its surroundings.

We recently came across a community post from 2024 about this house move, and it was lovely to see many people followed along, took photos and cheered the home on as it travelled to its new location.

This 2,500 sq. ft. West Coast home originally stood on Judges Row in Qualicum Beach. Built and once owned by H.R. MacMillan, one of British Columbia’s best-known entrepreneurs, it was filled with beautiful woodwork and the kind of character that’s difficult to recreate today.

In 2024, the house found a new owner and made its way to a property in the Campbell River area, where it was given the chance to continue as a family home.

Thank you to everyone who shared the original post, followed the move and cheered on our crew along the way. Seeing the community recognize the value of this well-built home and celebrate its second chance meant a lot to us.

Seeing a well-loved home was given the chance to carry on.

This home truly is a Queen. In 2008, she was recognized as an award-winning home by the District of West Vancouver and the North Shore Heritage Society.

In 2020, this 95-year-old “Queen Marine” left her longtime home on Marine Drive in West Vancouver for a new beginning on Malcolm Island. The journey took place overnight, with our crew carefully moving the house through West Vancouver, past traffic lights, beneath utility lines and across railway tracks. The timing was coordinated with the high tide, allowing the barge to move close enough to shore for the house to be safely transferred aboard.

This move was made possible by the developer, new owners, local authorities, heritage advocates and our moving crew working together. We hope more people will recognize the value of well-built older homes and consider relocation and reuse before demolition. With a shared vision and strong collaboration, more of these homes can continue their stories in new communities.

Last year, we moved this 1912-built Cashman Residence from Vancouver’s Point Grey neighbourhood to our Victoria storage site.

This remarkable house carries more than materials. It holds the labour, energy, craftsmanship, history and memories invested in it over more than a century.

But moving a heritage building into storage does not mean it has been fully saved. Relocation gives it time and keeps another possibility open, while long-term preservation requires a suitable site, a viable future use and people committed to its care.

Saving the structure is only the beginning. A meaningful new purpose is what turns a successful relocation into lasting preservation.

Built in 1932, this waterfront home spent decades on the shores of Sechelt. Its original hardwood floors, shiplap ceilings, and thoughtful details gave it a character that would be difficult to replace.

Rather than seeing the home demolished, a new owner chose to give it another life. Our crew carefully moved the 3,250 sq. ft. house onto a barge and transported it across the water to Thomas Point near Port Hardy, on northern Vancouver Island, where it could settle into a new location and continue to be enjoyed.

The move also preserved approximately 130,000 kg of embodied carbon and the equivalent of 264 trees, while keeping an estimated 162,500 kg of waste out of landfills.

For over 70 years, we have helped well-built homes find new places to belong. This one crossed the water, reached a new shore, and now has the opportunity to carry its story forward for generations to come.
