Meet CDS® Bernadette Melton!

Bernadette is a REALTOR® as well as a Certified Divorce Specialist (CDS®) and Certified Senior Advisor (CSA) with Compass, serving the northern Denver metro area and surrounding communities. With 10 years of residential real estate experience, she specializes in helping clients navigate real estate decisions that are often tied to major life transitions.

Her approach is centered on providing clear information, honest advice, and a balanced perspective so clients can make confident decisions—even when the circumstances surrounding a move are complicated or emotional. In divorce-related real estate, Bernadette focuses on remaining neutral, communicating consistently with all parties, and helping clients understand the practical implications of timing, property condition, pricing, preparation, and the sale or purchase of a home.

Bernadette also leads Trellis, a local educational group focused on helping people navigate transitions involving housing, aging, downsizing, divorce, estate planning, and related financial decisions. Through both her real estate practice and community involvement, she works closely with a network of professionals and resources to help clients understand their options and determine appropriate next steps.

Bernadette has lived in the northern Denver metro area for more than 22 years and serves clients throughout Erie, Broomfield, Thornton, Lafayette, Louisville, Longmont, Westminster, and surrounding communities.

One of the most common frustrations professionals experience is hearing themselves think:

"I already explained this."

The assumption is often that if clients understood the facts, they would naturally make the logical decision.

But divorce is rarely experienced as a purely logical event.

When people experience prolonged uncertainty, loss, conflict, or fear, the brain begins to prioritize immediate emotional protection over long term reasoning. That doesn't mean clients become irrational. It means they begin processing information through a different filter.

This is why some clients ask the same questions repeatedly, reverse decisions they confidently made yesterday, or struggle to move forward even after receiving excellent advice.

The instinctive response is often to provide more information.

In reality, the more effective response is to first create the conditions where information can actually be processed.

Understanding this distinction transforms communication.

It builds stronger client trust.

It improves collaboration.

It reduces unnecessary conflict.

And it allows your expertise to have the impact it was always intended to have.

These are the kinds of communication and client psychology principles explored throughout the Certified Divorce Specialist® (CDS®) Training, because understanding how people make decisions is just as important as knowing what they need to decide.

Have you ever watched a client make a decision that seemed completely irrational at first, only to understand it differently after learning more about what they were experiencing?

Meet CDS® Kayle Hutchison!

Kayle was raised in San Antonio and has always appreciated the
city's rich culture, history, and vibrant community. Her children attended the same schools she did before earning degrees at UT Austin. As a proud single mother, she taught them to work hard and chase their dreams — and they did. Today, her daughter is a pediatrician and her son is an investment banker, both thriving in Houston, and Kayle could not be prouder.

In 1999, Kayle became a certified personal trainer and soon after launched her own fitness coaching business, which she still runs today. A true people person, she loves connecting with others, sharing stories, and offering solutions. Over 25 years in business, she has developed a deep understanding of different personalities, strengthening her empathy, patience, and drive to help people.

Kayle brings that same heart to her 11-year career in real estate. She holds multiple professional designations — GRI, ABR, SRS, PSA, C2EX, and TACS — and became a Certified Divorce Specialist® (CDS®) in August 2024, equipping her to guide clients through one of life's most difficult transitions.

She approaches every divorce-related transaction with compassion, patience, and clear, practical guidance — helping clients understand their options and move forward with confidence during an emotional time. She listens first and works to ensure every client feels heard, respected, and empowered.

Above all, Kayle is passionate about people, and she genuinely loves helping others find solutions and build new, stronger chapters ahead.

Professionals often evaluate communication by asking:

"Did I explain it correctly?"

Clients evaluate communication very differently.

They ask themselves:

"Did I feel understood?"
"Do I trust this recommendation?"
"Do I feel confident enough to take the next step?"

That distinction changes everything.

In divorce work, emotions, uncertainty, and competing priorities all influence how information is received. Even the most accurate advice can lose its impact if it isn't communicated in a way that builds clarity and confidence.

Strong communication is not about being more persuasive.

It is about reducing confusion before it becomes resistance.

It is about recognizing what clients need emotionally in order to process information intellectually.

It is about strengthening collaboration with other professionals so everyone is working toward the same outcome.

These are skills that most professionals were never formally taught, despite using them every single day.

At the Certified Divorce Specialist® (CDS®) Training, communication is treated as a professional discipline, not a personality trait. Participants learn practical strategies they can immediately apply to client conversations, interdisciplinary collaboration, and high conflict situations.

Because in divorce work, expertise earns credibility.

Communication determines whether that credibility creates meaningful results.

How has communication, whether your own or someone else's, changed the outcome of a client interaction?

The best professionals do not rush clarity.

They understand that major decisions often come after clients feel heard, supported, and fully informed. In divorce real estate, that awareness can influence not only the transaction, but also the client’s confidence in every step that follows.

The CDS® designation helps professionals strengthen the judgment, communication, and interdisciplinary perspective required to serve clients with greater intention.

Thank you to Alessandra Gräfin Kamensky, Global Real Estate Agent in Florida, for sharing how the training influenced her approach.

The most valuable professional development is not about confirming what you already know. It is about uncovering perspectives you didn't realize were missing.

When professionals gain a broader understanding of how divorce affects every aspect of a client's life, they are better equipped to collaborate across disciplines, anticipate challenges, and create better outcomes for the families they serve.

Thank you to Tiana Uribe, Real Estate Broker from California, for sharing her experience with the CDS® program.
