Nothing humbles a closing day faster than opening the fridge…

As an agent in PEI, I learned quickly there are certain statements that should always make you nervous:
-
“We’ll be out on time.”
-
“The septic has never given us trouble.”
-
And everyone’s favourite:
“Don’t worry — we cleaned.”
-
Closing day arrived like closing days usually do: buyers excited, sellers stressed, lawyers busy, movers booked, and everyone running on caffeine and determination 🤢
-
I booked the pre-closing inspection for closing morning and headed over with my excited buyers for the final walkthrough before keys were released 🔑
-
Spirits were high.
Until we opened the door.
What we found wasn’t cleaned. It was vacated.
-
The fridge still held enough condiments to survive an Island winter.
Cupboards had crumbs tucked in corners.
The oven looked like it had survived 20 years of Sunday dinners and questionable casserole decisions.

Then came the garage…
-
Because in PEI, garages and sheds are where belongings go when homeowners emotionally cannot let go.
Broken patio furniture ❌
Half-empty paint cans 🫟
Random lumber 🪵
Extension cords nobody had touched since 2009 ⚡️

Then came the realization nobody wants on closing day:
🚫The buyers couldn’t fully move in.
☎️Cleaners had to be called.
😒Movers were waiting, and charging.

What should have been pizza-on-moving-boxes excitement became garbage bags, rubber gloves, and frustration.

Here’s the reality:
Removing your belongings is not cleaning.

Your version of clean may not be someone else’s.
And leaving a home dirty creates more than stress — it creates costs, delays, awkward conversations, and stories agents tell for years.

Before handing over keys, ask yourself:
“If I walked into this after spending hundreds of thousands of dollars… would I be happy?”

Because buyers rarely remember spotless floors.
