KNOW YOUR VALUE
Your value is not determined by the person trying to pay you less.
It is built through years of experience, sacrifice, relationships, knowledge, results and lessons learned the hard way. It reflects the early mornings, late nights, missed family time, unanswered calls, difficult negotiations and countless hours spent working on opportunities that never reached the finish line.
People often see the successful result, but they rarely see everything required to produce it.
They don’t see the research, preparation, marketing, travel, phone calls, meetings, follow-ups, problem solving or financial investment happening behind the scenes. They see the deal close and assume the work began when the contract was signed.
It didn’t.
Your fee isn’t simply compensation for the final transaction. It represents the expertise, reputation, relationships and judgment you bring to the entire process.
There will always be someone willing to charge less. That doesn’t make them more valuable as it only makes them less expensive.
If you continually reduce your fee whenever someone questions it, you teach people that your value is negotiable. You also risk resenting the work because you agreed to provide your full effort without receiving fair compensation for it.
Standing firm does not make you arrogant, greedy or difficult. It means you understand what you bring to the table.
You can be flexible. You can negotiate. You can find solutions. But flexibility must work both ways, and any reduction in compensation should come with a corresponding adjustment in scope, commitment or expectations.
Not every client, listing or opportunity is worth pursuing. Sometimes the strongest business decision you can make is respectfully walking away.
Know your value. Respect your time. Protect your reputation. Stand behind the quality of your work.
The right people will recognize it.
The ones who don’t were never the right fit.
