I was outside gardening tonight, covered in dirt and doing what feels like the never-ending work of bringing this home back to life, when a gentleman pulled into my driveway.

He said, “I don’t know you, and you don’t know me, but I drive by this house all the time and I didn’t even recognize it as the same house. You’ve done such an amazing job.”

And honestly… how kind is that?

For someone to take the time to stop, to encourage a stranger, and to recognize the work that’s gone into something — it meant more than he probably realized.

This home wasn’t left to me in a loving way. It wasn’t handed over with care. But I’ve always believed that sometimes we don’t fall in love with a home exactly as it is — we fall in love with what we know it could be.

And I really do believe homes are a lot like anything else in life. The more we pour into them, the more we nurture them, maintain them, care for them, and love on them… the more they give back.

A home becomes part of us. It holds our effort, our hopes, our hard days, our fresh starts, and little by little, it starts to feel alive again.

So to the kind stranger who stopped tonight — thank you. Thank you for the encouragement, and for seeing the time, work, and heart that’s gone into this place.

And maybe there’s a little lesson in that too. Take the moment. Say the kind thing. Encourage the stranger. You never know how much someone might need to hear it.
