📣Attention all Family Caregivers, hear me when I say this 📣

YOU have not failed your aging parent because he/she may need to be cared for in a care home.

It is their health that has failed.

The health care practitioners (doctors, nurses, social workers) must recommend the next best place for the person to receive the care they needs.

Sometimes, that is no longer in a home setting.

No one willingly places their family member in a care home; that is determined by their health/health care needs and the risk factors of living in a less supervised environment.

The other factor of course, could be finances.

It is very expensive, almost cost prohibitive, to have full time care at home.
It would cost approximately $25,000/month for full time, around the clock home care workers from a Home Care agency.

So, no more promises of never putting your parent in a care home.
For this could be the exact place that they need to be in order to receive the care that they need...and deserve.

We are looking for an apartment or home to rent in Gagetown. Do you know anyone that has a spare room that they would consider renting? Do you know a senior who would consider a boarder who would be company and assist with meal prep and cleaning? We are looking for short-term and long-term options.
We are assisting Orchard View Long Term Care Home to resettle 10 new families that are moving to Gagetown to work as Personal Care Workers. They will be arriving at various times over the next year and we expect the first family in the next 6-8 weeks.

A wonderful tip

Many of you will be coming home this Holiday season and seeing an aging parent or family member that you care for and support, from a distance.

I encourage you to come prepared to start what might be a difficult conversation.

I know.
It's hard.
I avoided them for years!

We weren't taught how to initiate these kind of conversations.
It can make us feel uncomfortable and out of control.

It's a generational difference, too; these are not the kind of conversations we are used to and neither are our older family members.

Talk to your family about their plans as they age.
Ask how they see their senior years.
Determine what they want and how you can support them to make that happen.

Don't make any promises you can't keep.
But do be honest and open about what you are prepared to do.

It may not be pretty.
It doesn't have to be polished.
It will probably get emotional.

But be brave and start the conversation this Holiday.

Put together a survival bag for move day. It should include medications, eyeglasses, phone chargers, toiletries, change of clothes, important papers and payment for movers (be sure you know which form of payment they accept).
