Acadian Construction to build YMCA community centre in Moncton’s north end

(Moncton, N.B. – April 17, 2018) A new community centre for north-end Moncton moved closer to reality this week as the YMCA of Greater Moncton chose a firm to oversee construction of the $15-million project.

After a comprehensive review in conjunction with the City of Moncton, the YMCA named Acadian Construction Ltd. as general contractor to develop the centre, says the local Y’s CEO Zane Korytko. The facility will be erected on land on a yet-to-be-built extension of Twin Oaks Drive, between École Le Sommet and Evergreen Park School.

“Six firms responded to our bid request for project and construction management services,” says Korytko. “We narrowed the field to three and then one. We are excited to be working with Acadian Construction, a well-respected, local company. We expect to sign a contract in the next few weeks.”

Once that deal is complete, the YMCA will issue a new bid request, this time for an architect to design the north-end centre, which will be 25,000 to 35,000 square feet in size. It will contain areas for fitness programs, weight training and community programs, an indoor splash pad and playground, multi-purpose spaces, as well as an elevated, indoor walking track with elevator access.

“We’re on track for construction of the centre to begin in the spring of 2019 and an opening in late 2020,” says Kortyko. He noted that the current YMCA at 30 War Veterans Avenue will operate as usual after the satellite Y is unveiled.

After being asked to collaborate on the project, the YMCA of Greater Moncton has been working on a north-end centre for the past three years with the City of Moncton and the North Moncton Citizens’ Action Group. For 147 years, the YMCA of Greater Moncton—a registered charity—has provided children and adults with a variety of programs and services dedicated to personal growth and has spearheaded many community initiatives.

On December 18, 2017, Moncton City Council unanimously approved proceeding with the north-end project, working together with the YMCA to facilitate the design and construction of the community centre. The partnership agreement followed feasibility studies, conceptual planning and a detailed functional program review to establish a clear understanding of activities that could be accommodated at the centre.

As work is moving ahead with the plan, the YMCA and the City of Moncton continue to pursue funding for the project, says Kortyko.

“We’re optimistic all levels of government will acknowledge the need for a quality facility in a growing part of our community and will contribute appropriate levels of funding,” he says. “We have asked the federal government and the province to contribute $4 million each for a total contribution of $8 million.”

The City of Moncton has already agreed to contribute $6 million, inclusive of the Twin Oaks Drive construction, to initiate the project.

"The City is pleased to take this next step with the YMCA for this much needed and long awaited community recreational facility,” says Moncton Mayor Dawn Arnold. “We are happy to be a funding partner and we look forward to hearing positive news from the other levels of government.”

The YMCA of Greater Moncton has committed to a capital campaign of $3 million, tentatively slated to begin in late 2018.

“We’re thrilled to hear things are moving forward with the centre,” says Jeffrey Reath, member of the North Moncton Citizens’ Action Group, which has been pushing for the facility for more than a decade. “Along with our partners at the YMCA, we remain hopeful that funding from the province and Government of Canada will be forthcoming to solidify this project. It is not often that a project comes along with benefits for all ages and backgrounds. This will be a true centre of our community in Moncton.”
