I MIGHT GET CANCELLED FOR SAYING THIS
…but since today is International Women’s Day, let me share an honest thought.
After living in Dubai for almost two decades, I appreciate some policies here that help create an environment where women are respected.
No country is perfect. But there may be a few systems here that other countries — ehem, Philippines — could use.
1️⃣ *C*orn websites are blocked, restricting easy access to content that often objectifies women.
2️⃣ Media content is also regulated. You rarely see overly sexualized billboards along the roads. Governement do not allow sensual posters for liquors, for example. (Look at the billboards in the photo)
3️⃣ Malls and public places encourage modest dress guidelines. Not to control women, but to keep shared spaces respectful for everyone.
4️⃣ You also won’t find motels openly promoting “short-time” casual encounters with loud advertisements.
5️⃣ Most importantly, harassment laws are strict. Catcalling, disrespectful comments online or offline, or inappropriate behavior toward women can lead to heavy fines or even jail time.
NOW LET ME MAKE SOMETHING VERY CLEAR.
Respect for women always begins with men taking responsibility for their behavior. No dress code, billboard, or law can ever replace basic decency and self-control.
Men must be educated, and accountable for their actions. Period. That responsibility will always be on us.
But wise societies also recognize that environment shapes culture. So they try to remove things that constantly normalize objectification or give temptation a foothold.
Again, this is just a perspective from someone who has lived here for almost twenty years.
And if International Women’s Day reminds us of anything, it’s this:
Women deserve more than celebration. They deserve a culture, and laws, that actively protect them!
