Fell in love with a house at the open house? Look again.
One of the things I appreciate about a slower market is that buyers often have something they didn’t always have in a fast market:
Time.
Time to go back a second time.
Time to see the house in different light.
Time to open every closet.
Time to think about the layout.
Time to actually imagine yourself living there.
And I think this can be especially valuable when you’re downsizing.
Moving from the family home into your next chapter is a big decision. You’re not just choosing a beautiful kitchen or a great view. You’re thinking about how you want to live for the next 10, 15 or 20 years.
Does the home work for your everyday life?
Is there enough storage, but not so much that you’re maintaining space you no longer need?
Is it easy to get outside? Easy to lock up and leave? Does the layout make sense for how you live now?
And perhaps most importantly...
Does it feel like a home you can see yourself enjoying, rather than simply a house you think you should buy?
There’s no need to rush that decision.
Go back. Sit in the living room. Walk through the neighbourhood. Have a coffee nearby. Imagine a rainy Tuesday morning, not just a beautiful Sunday afternoon.
Sometimes the second or third visit tells you much more than the first.
A home can look amazing at an open house. The real question is whether it works for your life.
And when you have a little more time to figure that out, that’s a pretty valuable thing.
