What is Asbestos?
-----------------------------------------------------------
Asbestos is a term used to refer to six naturally occurring silicate minerals that are composed of long and thin fibrous crystals.
In houses built before 1990, asbestos was used in a lot of building materials because it is an excellent electrical insulator, is highly
heat resistant, sturdy, and long-lasting. While Canada has now banned the use of asbestos, many homes and buildings still have traces of it. Some of the construction materials that can potentially contain asbestos are, insulation (vermiculite), cement, plaster, drywall, paint, asphalt, heating systems, plumbing materials, house siding, roofing materials as well as floor and ceiling tiles.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Risks associated with asbestos exposure: Asbestosis, lung Cancer, Mesotheliom, some other cancers in the esophagus, larynx, oral cavity, stomach, colon and kidney may be caused by ingesting asbestos.
