The federal government has officially passed legislation eliminating the GST on newly built homes for first-time buyers. This is now law as of March 12, 2026 — and the savings are significant.

Here's the quick breakdown:

💰 Up to $50,000 saved on the federal GST alone
💰 Ontario is also rebating the provincial portion — combined savings up to $130,000
📅 Retroactive to agreements signed after March 20, 2025
🏠 Applies to new construction homes only (Barrhaven, Kanata, Stittsville, Orleans & more)
⏰ Program runs until December 31, 2030

Ottawa Real Estate Market Update – February 2026

The Ottawa housing market continued its seasonal winter slowdown in February, but the underlying story is more balanced than the headline numbers suggest.

Here are a few highlights from the latest data:

• Average residential sale price: $662,773
• 780 homes sold in February
• Townhomes remain the most active segment
• Inventory has increased, giving buyers more choice

While sales activity was lower than last year, prices have remained relatively stable and demand is still strong at key price points. More inventory is allowing buyers to take a little more time with decisions, but well-priced homes are still attracting attention.

As we move closer to the spring market, this balanced environment could create opportunities for both buyers and sellers.
