Ottawa Community Land Trust

09/16/2026

From September 28-30, Community Land Trust (CLT) representatives from across the country are gathering here in Ottawa for the annual Canadian Canadian Network of Community Land Trusts (CNCLT) Summit. For those of us at the OCLT, we can’t wait for our local community to meet our friends from across the country! (It’s like friend groups colliding) :)

Join us for food and drinks September 29 from 5-7 at BEYOND THE PALE BREWING COMPANY OTTAWA! Come meet and connect with OCLT Board, staff, supporters and Housing Forever Bond investors - and with those attending the Summit. This is a national movement - and we can’t wait for you all to meet one another!

While this is a brewpub, there are a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages available. Just a short walk from Bayview Yards (where our Summit takes place), and from the Bayview LRT station. There is a large patio, and the building is wheelchair accessible.

Tuesday, September 29, 5:00 - 7:00 pm
Beyond the Pale, 250 City Centre Avenue

See you then!

Each one is exciting! With thanks again to community coming together, the Ottawa Community Land Trust is thrilled to announce its fourth building acquisition - a Centretown home acquired in July! While OCLT will own and maintain the property, Matthew House Ottawa will operate it under a long-term lease, providing wrap-around support to assist newcomers rebuilding their lives in Canada.

The property was purchased from Salus Ottawa, a supportive housing provider selling smaller properties to generate equity for new, larger development. The sale keeps the home under nonprofit, community ownership — and helps three organizations that are all committed to affordable housing grow. A win-win-win.

The acquisition was financed through mortgage financing from Vancity Community Investment Bank, philanthropic capital, and Housing Forever Bonds — the community investment vehicle at the core of our acquisition model.

Again, this model works. And there’s an immediate opportunity for you to be involved. The OCLT currently has an accepted offer on a multi-unit building with more than 25 units. Another $1m in Housing Forever Bond investments will enable us to secure this, alongside our other properties, as affordable forever.

Housing Forever Bonds remain open to new investors, starting at $1,000. Learn more at housingforeverbonds.ca

Our joint campaign with ccochousing continues! Having acquired buildings in Riverview Park in June, and Centretown in July, we’re already hard at work on a couple others in several neighbourhoods - preserving rental housing and ensuring permanent affordability.

The ingredient that makes all this possible? Community investors through Housing Forever Bonds. Curious to learn more? Link in our bio.

Today, we announced our third property: 700 Coronation Ave. 31 rental homes are now permanently affordable.

The sellers came to us. Mark Farrell and John Earl had owned this building for years. When it came time to sell, they wanted their tenants to be able to stay — without a rent spike, without a renoviction. They found OCLT, liked what they saw, and together we made it happen.

Next, they’re investing a portion of the sale proceeds in Housing Forever Bonds, so the same thing can happen again somewhere else in Ottawa.

The site also includes a parking lot where we plan to build modest new affordable housing in the coming years — more homes, on land already in community hands.

None of this happens without our bondholders. Since 2024, 190 investors have put $4.4 million into Housing Forever Bonds — Ottawans and organizations who believe the community should have a stake in keeping housing affordable.

Ottawa is losing 31 affordable homes for every one it builds. We’re not going to solve that overnight. But we are building a portfolio of homes that will be affordable not just for today’s tenants — but for generations to come.

Thank you to everyone who made 700 Coronation possible: our bondholders, our partners, and Mark and John for choosing a different kind of sale.

Come join us! The OCLT AGM takes place on Wednesday, May 6, beginning at 6pm (until 8:30). And you are all invited!

In 2025, we continued to lay the foundation for sustainability and growth. While we’ll reflect on the past year at this year’s AGM, we’ll also welcome a panel discussion, highlighting the partnerships that infuse two exciting acquisitions currently underway. Join us May 6 to hear from the owner of a 31-unit apartment building selling to the OCLT. We’ll also hear from Mark MacAulay, President and CEO of Ottawa Salus, from whom OCLT is working to acquire a Centretown home to preserve the building as community-owned (while supporting Ottawa Salus with the resources to grow its impact). And finally, we’ll hear from Kailee Brennan, ED at Matthew House Ottawa, to whom the OCLT intends to lease a property, ensuring a long-term, secure and affordable lease. Our work - enabled by community - is focused on preserving and expanding Ottawa’s community-owned affordable housing - and we can’t wait to share more with you!

Come to meet your neighbours - and enjoy conversation and light bites! We’ll be gathering at Impact Hub Ottawa (123 Slater Street, 6th floor). To assist us in plans, please take a moment to register at the link in our bio.
