📍 Nu to Yu Building – Pender Island, BC

06/28/2026

Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming members of the Nu-To-Yu Board and many of the volunteers who have helped bring this project to life.

For years, they’ve been fundraising, planning, organizing, volunteering, and working toward a shared vision. This visit was an opportunity to see that vision taking shape in a very real way.

Davis walked the group through the project, shared some of the milestones along the way, explained what comes next, and answered questions about the build.

It’s easy to look at a foundation and see concrete. It’s a little different when you know the story behind it. This foundation represents years of dedication from people who believe in creating something that will continue to give back to Pender Island for generations.

Concrete is surprisingly emotional when you’ve been fundraising for years. And everyone agreed it looked significantly better than an empty lot.

We’re proud to play a small part in that story, and we’re looking forward to sharing the journey as the building continues to grow.

The most important work happening on site right now isn't being done by excavators, trucks, or crews.

It's being done by time.

Every building starts with a foundation, and every foundation starts with patience.

The exciting stuff is coming. This is the part where we make sure it lasts.

Pulling off a pour of this size on an island takes a surprising amount of coordination. Seven concrete trucks, one pump truck, multiple crews, ferry schedules, timing windows, and approximately one thousand moving parts all had to line up at exactly the right time.

Thankfully, they did.

A huge thank you to Butler Concrete, City
Pumping, BC Ferries, MLR Construction, and everyone involved.

The walls were built using ICFs (Insulated Concrete Forms), which stay in place after the concrete is poured. The forms become part of the finished wall, providing strength, insulation, and energy efficiency in a single system.

We’re told this may have been the largest concrete pour in Pender Island history. We weren’t around for all of them, but seven concrete trucks certainly gets your attention.

So what happens now?

Mostly... we wait.

Concrete gains strength over time and takes about 28 days to fully cure. While that’s happening, the foundation walls are busy becoming the solid backbone of the new Nu-To-Yu community building.

Last week was a big milestone. Onward to the next one.

🚧 Important Notice 🚧

On Tuesday, June 2, between approximately 7:00am and 11:00am, there may be minor traffic delays near the Nu-To-Yu construction site as several concrete trucks will be arriving throughout the morning.

We appreciate your patience as we take another big step forward on the project. Any delays should be brief, and we’ll do our best to keep things moving smoothly.

Thank you, Pender Island!

Heads up Pender Island 👋

On Monday, May 11 from approximately 7:00am to 12:00pm, there may be minor traffic delays near the Driftwood Centre area while we pour concrete at the new Nu-To-Yu community building site located at 4606 Bedwell Harbour Rd.

Concrete trucks will be entering, exiting, and occasionally waiting to access the site, so traffic may slow briefly at times. We’ll be doing our best to keep everything moving safely and efficiently, and any disruptions should be short.

We really appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while this project comes together. Thank you again for being so welcoming to our crew while we work on this exciting community build.

While we love seeing the community excited about the project, this is still an active construction site with heavy equipment and moving trucks, so please help us keep everyone safe by staying outside the work area during the pour. We’ll make sure to post photos and videos as soon as possible once things wrap up.
