As April arrives, prawning season opens — a west coast experience you won’t forget. Head out on the water, pull your traps, and enjoy the freshest prawns you’ve ever tasted for dinner that very evening.
By May, the island comes alive. Swarms of hummingbirds return, wildflowers bloom, and the air feels fresh with possibility. It’s peaceful, vibrant, and full of quiet wonder.

🎣 Calling All Fishermen from Afar! 🦐🦀

Every season, we watch your boats anchored just offshore—tending traps, heading home, and returning again the next day. Why not make it easy on yourself and turn your trip into a relaxing overnight stay at The Homestead?

Located on Read Island in Surge Narrows, right in the heart of the renowned Hoskyn Channel prawning grounds, our cozy vacation rental offers the perfect base for your fishing adventure. Drop your traps, keep an eye on your buoys from the warmth and comfort of the house, and enjoy a relaxed place to unwind while your pots fill up. When it’s time, head back out to pull your traps—then bring your catch back and we’ll help package it up for you!

No boat? No problem! For guests without their own vessel, we offer pickup from our designated location and have all the necessary gear to take you out prawning. Enjoy the full experience—time on the water, a comfortable stay, and head home with fresh prawns to share.

We’re open April 15th to October 15th, giving you plenty of opportunity to enjoy opening season before the commercial fleet arrives.

This year we are now able to accept contactless payments for fishing charter's and sight seeing tours! Currently accepting debit and credit - Visa, Mastercard, Amex, as well as mobile wallets like Apple pay, Google Pay and Samsung pay - and of course cash payments and PayPal are still okay.

At Surge Sunsets there is so much to do - we offer complimentary kayaks, paddle boards and canoe. There are plenty of beautiful hikes to go on right from the back yard. We also offer sight seeing tours and fishing charter! 🎣
Or feel free to pick a book from the Homestead and just kick back on the outdoor deck, overlooking the ocean 🌊
