It's that time of year again: Surrey Parks' quarterly tree sale. All trees are $20. Most trees are in 3- or 5-gallon pots and vary between 5 and 12 feet tall. Ensure your vehicle can accommodate this.

Surrey residents can buy quality trees at an affordable price to help grow the urban forest. New trees planted on your property will provide shade and insulation for your home, increase your property value, make your neighbourhood more livable, and will help grow the urban forest by increasing tree canopy coverage.

Purchases are made online with the store opening on August 18 at 9am until Sept 1 (while supplies last). Tree pickup will be on September 13 at the Surrey Operations Centre located at 6651 148 Street.

This program is for private properties in Surrey; the trees are only available to Surrey residents. Trees must be purchased using a credit card with a Surrey billing name and address. Purchases made with billing addresses outside of Surrey will be cancelled.
A maximum of two trees per Surrey address, based on your billing address. Additional orders using the same billing address will be cancelled.

Cool off: 7 places to beat the heat in South Surrey and White Rock:

Summer is here, and the sun is shining — but there are plenty of ways to keep your cool in the summer heat in White Rock and South Surrey. Here’s a few ways to beat the heat:

1. Hit the beach: both White Rock Beach and Crescent Beach in South Surrey offer stretches of sand, cool ocean breezes, which can also be enjoyed from a floatie, kayak or paddle board. There’s also plenty of food and beverage offerings from local businesses to help bring temperatures down on a hot summer day, from ice cream and gelato to iced tea, iced coffees and more.

2. Swimming season: Several outdoor pools are open through the summer in Surrey — all with free admission — including Sunnyside outdoor pool at 15455 26 Avenue and Greenaway outdoor pool at 17901 60 Avenue.

3. Make a splash: Water spray parks offer a refreshing way to cool off for families, and there’s a couple in White Rock and South Surrey, including the splash zone at White Rock’s Memorial Park, with the iconic pier, promenade and ocean offering spectacular views. South Surrey Athletic Park, located at 14600 20 Avenue, offers a spray park as well, with reduced hours of 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. due to stage 2 Metro Vancouver water restrictions (as of June 1).

4. Friendly forests: Whether Redwood Park, Sunnyside Urban Acres Forest Park or Crescent Park, there are several forested park areas throughout the Semiahmoo Peninsula that offer cool trails and shaded play areas for families when the heat is high.

5. Bookworms unite: Both the Semiahmoo Library (1815 152 St.) and Ocean Park Library (12854 17 Ave.) offer air-conditioned spaces to read and relax for those who prefer to keep cool indoors on hot summer days.

6. Community minded: Keeping with the indoor theme, White Rock Community Centre at 15154 Russell Ave. and South Surrey Recreation Centre at 14601 20th Ave. offer air-conditioned indoor spaces for people of all ages to beat the heat.

7. Make my coffee iced: Plenty of local cafés, coffee shops, restaurants and bistros offer cool, air-conditioned spaces — often with wifi available — as well as refreshing, iced, blended beverages of all varieties.

Would this be a better idea here in Metro Vancouver versus safe injection sites in residential areas and random unhousing?

Interesting approach from Bellingham. The city is expanding its transitional housing with another 35–40 tiny homes, building on two existing villages that connect residents with employment, housing, and healthcare services.

Providing people with a safe place to live while helping them access the support they need seems like a positive, long-term investment. It raises an important question: should communities be placing more emphasis on transitional housing solutions like this, rather than focusing primarily on supervised consumption sites in residential areas?

Addressing homelessness and addiction is complex, and there is no single solution. Housing, treatment, mental health care, and recovery supports all have important roles to play. Bellingham's model is certainly worth watching to see what results it achieves.

Night market returns to White Rock waterfront May 1:

A sure sign that summer is on it way is the return of the White Rock Night Market to the city’s waterfront.

This year, the free, family-friendly event launches another season starting Friday, May 1 from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. along the White Rock’s promenade and Memorial Park by the iconic pier.

Locals and visitors alike flock to the waterfront for the Friday night tradition, which features a vibrant variety of food trucks, live entertainment, an artisan market and more.

The night market will take place once a month on select Fridays from May through September, making each event a unique celebration of local flavour and culture.

The May 1 season opener will feature:

• A curated lineup of food trucks, including favourites like REEL Mac and Cheese, The Taco Tigre, and Es Pizza Co.

• 20+ local artisans as part of the BC Shop Local Market

• Live entertainment and music throughout the evening

• A licensed beverage garden (19+)

• A stunning oceanfront setting steps from the White Rock Pier
With rotating food truck lineups and vendors each month, every market offers a fresh experience for attendees.

The White Rock Night Market is back near the pier for another year! Find us May 1, June 5, July 17, August 7 and September 4, 2026!
