The Big Canoe has been making this crossing for more than 50 years. Over time, it stopped being just a ferry schedule and became one of those tradition weekends people start planning for again the week after it ends.

Slo-pitch baseball all weekend. People crushing dingers on the field. People crushing hot dogs off the field. These two groups often merging by the 3rd inning.

Cardboard boat races in the harbour bring a crowd fully invested in watching cardboard do what cardboard naturally wants to do in water.

Then Saturday night hits. The Festival Cruise. Boarding at 6:30 PM, sailing at 7:00, back around 11:00. BBQ dinner, live music from and fireworks between 10:00 and 10:30 over the water 🎆.

It’s the Tobermory locals’ most anticipated weekend for a reason.

Seeking cave people 🥾🪨...

Not The Descent cave people. The hiking boot, Cliff Bar, “where do you think this goes?” kind of cave people. Tobermory is calling your name!

And yes, everyone knows the Grotto. Very pretty, very scenic, very photographed. But that’s not the only cave situation here.

There are other spots around town locals mention with suspicious vagueness, potentially because they don’t want to deal with explaining the parking situation.

North Star Cottage feels like the setting of one of those 90s summer vacation movies where everyone starts slightly stressed but ends up with everyone eating popsicles outside talking about life and the bonds of family or something.

Three bedrooms. Two bathrooms. And enough room for the whole family to spread out without anyone becoming “the reluctant but selfless couch person.”

Mornings start with deck coffee and ambitious plans. Then the hammock enters the conversation and suddenly nobody is in much of a rush anymore.

Kids disappear outside. Adults rediscover sitting still and debating things that don't matter over drinks, like the best cover of Hallelujah (no consensus has ever been reached,).

At night, the firepit takes over. Stories get told, details get corrected, s’mores get priority.

And yes, there’s an outdoor shower 🚿

It’s time to make a change… a Cool Change!

This feels like walking into Blockbuster in November 2004 and somehow still finding a copy of Shrek 2 sitting on the shelf untouched. 🎬

I asked my partner what she thought when she saw Elenriel...
