Today's announcement of a $154 million surplus in our 2011 operating budget is good news for Toronto taxpayers. Much of the surplus is a direct a result of smart management as City staff implemented millions of dollars in efficiencies this year. This money will help us pay for capital purchases we need to improve transit in Toronto.

Help Clear Up Public Confusion on HST and Resale Homes

Even though consumers have been dealing with the HST since July 1, 2010, it appears there is still confusion about its applicability to the purchase price of resale homes.

GTA REALTORS® have been working to help dispel HST misconceptions. Consumers buying a resale home do not pay HST on the purchase price of the home. On the other hand, if you are buying a newly constructed home, HST will apply.

Although the costs of purchasing or renting a commercial property are subject to HST, businesses are allowed to claim tax credits to offset these costs.

GTA REALTORS® Report Mid-Month Resale Housing Market Figures
December 16, 2011 -- Greater Toronto REALTORS® reported 2,699 transactions through the TorontoMLS® system during the first 14 days of December. This result was 11 per cent above the number of transactions recorded during the same period in 2010. On a year-to-date basis, sales amounted to 87,407 – up 4.3 per cent compared to 2010.
