Mortgage Rule Changes As July 9, 2012

1. Amortization period of 30 years have been reduced to 25 years.

2. Canadians can now only borrow when refinancing up to 80% of the value of their homes rather than 85%.

3. The maximum gross debt service ratio is now fixed at 39% and the maximum total debt service ratio is fixed at 44%.

4. There will be limits set on the availability of government-backed insured mortgages to homes with a purchase price of less than $1 million.

These four new measures were announced by the Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance.
