Most people think luxury means less movement.
Less effort.
Less friction.
Less inconvenience.
But the older I get, the more convinced I am that the greatest luxury in life is actually the opposite.
It’s health.
And more specifically, it’s the ability to move through your life naturally, every single day, without scheduling it or thinking about it.
I recently read a blog post by Brandon Donnelly where he used the term “organic movement” to describe the kind of movement that happens when your environment quietly requires it. Not workouts. Not gyms. Just walking, stairs, and daily life happening on foot.
That idea clicked immediately because it overlaps with something I’ve been writing and talking about for years: walkable living.
Walkable living isn’t just about convenience. It’s about design. It’s about whether your neighbourhood requires you to walk to coffee, school, transit, groceries, and dinner. When movement is required, it becomes consistent. And when it’s consistent, it quietly compounds into better health over time.
This is exactly what researchers see in Blue Zones around the world. People don’t exercise more. They live in places where movement is unavoidable.
I see a modern version of this every day in Midtown Toronto. Neighbourhoods like Summerhill, Lawrence Park, Yonge & Eglinton, Davisville, and Forest Hill don’t just allow walking. They require it. And over time, residents adapt, then prefer it.
I wrote a full piece connecting organic movement, walkable living, and Midtown Toronto neighbourhoods, and why this may be one of the most overlooked luxuries of all.
