Tri Hita Karana is a traditional Balinese philosophy that means “the three causes of well-being (or happiness).”
It comes from the Bali Balinese culture, deeply rooted in their form of Balinese Hinduism, and guides how people live their daily lives.
What it means -
Tri Hita Karana is built on three core relationships:
1. Parahyangan – harmony between humans and the divine (spiritual connection, temples, rituals)
2. Pawongan – harmony among people (community, respect, relationships)
3. Palemahan – harmony with nature (environment, land, sustainability)
In the mornings in Bali, you’ll often see people placing small offerings and lighting incense in front of temples and homes. These offerings, called Canang Sari, are part of daily Balinese Hindu practice, where people express gratitude, seek balance, and maintain harmony with nature, the divine, and the community. It’s a quiet, beautiful ritual that reflects how deeply spirituality is woven into everyday life in Bali.
A quiet lesson I didn’t know I needed 💫
