What You Should Know Instead!
1. MYTH: โA TFSA can only hold cash.โ
Not necessarily. A TFSA can hold cash, but it can also hold certain qualified investments such as GICs, bonds, mutual funds, and securities listed on designated stock exchanges.
๐ก Quick tip: Donโt just ask, โDo I have a TFSA?โ Ask, โWhat is actually inside my TFSA, and does it make sense for what Iโm trying to achieve?โ
2. MYTH: โA TFSA is automatically an investment.โ
Opening a TFSA doesnโt automatically mean your money is invested. A TFSA is the account structure. What you choose to hold inside it determines whether your money is sitting in cash or invested.
๐ก Quick tip: Check your TFSA instead of assuming itโs already doing what you want it to do.
3. MYTH: โTFSA contributions reduce my taxable income.โ
Unlike RRSP contributions, TFSA contributions are not tax deductible. The benefit is that eligible income and growth inside the account are generally tax-free, including when withdrawn.
๐ก Quick tip: TFSA and RRSP rules are different. Before contributing, understand which account better fits the specific goal youโre saving for.
4. MYTH: โIf I withdraw money, I can always put it back immediately.โ
Be careful with this one. A withdrawal is generally added back to your contribution room on January 1 of the following calendar year, not automatically on the day you withdraw it. Re-contributing too soon without enough unused room can create an over-contribution.
๐ก Quick tip: Before putting withdrawn money back into your TFSA, check your available contribution room first.
5. MYTH: โMore TFSAs mean more contribution room.โ
You can have more than one TFSA, but you donโt receive a separate contribution limit for each account. Your available contribution room applies across all of your TFSAs combined.
๐ก Quick tip: Multiple accounts can be harder to track, so keep records of contributions and withdrawals across every TFSA you have.
6. MYTH: โTax-free means guaranteed growth.โ
โTax-freeโ describes the tax treatment. It does not mean an investment is guaranteed to increase in value. What happens to the money depends on what you hold inside the TFSA. CRA also notes that investment gains or losses do not change your TFSA contribution room.
๐ก Quick tip: Donโt choose an investment just because it can sit inside a TFSA. Understand its features and risks first.
7. MYTH: โA TFSA and life insurance do the same job.โ
They serve different purposes. A TFSA is a registered account designed for saving and investing, while insurance is generally used as part of a financial strategy to address specific protection needs. A person may use one, the other, or both depending on their circumstances and goals.
๐ก Quick tip: Instead of asking which one is โbetter,โ ask what financial need youโre trying to solve first.
How many of these TFSA myths did you believe? ๐
Understanding the account is one thing. Knowing how it fits into your bigger financial picture is another.
