The Cowichan case has generated significant discussion across British Columbia, raising questions about Aboriginal title, property rights, and the potential implications for real estate.

In the latest episode of The Critical Path, legal counsel Wally Braul and Josh Jantzi provide a detailed examination of the case, breaking down the facts, the legal issues before the courts, and the broader considerations for the profession.

Last week, GVR Chief Corporate Development Officer Craig Munn presented and participated in a panel discussion at a Vancouver conference focused on Indigenous economic development.

During his presentation, Craig highlighted the work underway at GVR to strengthen relationships between the REALTOR® community and Indigenous communities across Canada. This work is focused on supporting economic development, increasing understanding, and fostering stronger partnerships within the rapidly growing Indigenous-led development sector.

These efforts align with several initiatives currently underway at GVR to build awareness, create meaningful connections, and identify opportunities for collaboration. Members and staff can expect to hear more about new partnerships and initiatives in the coming months.

This work also connects closely to Transforming Landscapes, the joint research initiative recently launched by GVR and the Real Estate Institute of BC (REIBC). The project aims to advance understanding of Indigenous participation and opportunities within the real estate profession and broader real estate sector, helping inform future collaboration and growth.

A lagging apartment segment dragged Metro Vancouver’s monthly sales total lower in May, with residential sales down 3.5% compared to the same month last year and 26.6% below the 10-year seasonal average.

Meanwhile, inventory remained elevated, with nearly 16,900 homes listed for sale across the region. With demand continuing to track closely with forecasts and no obvious near-term market catalysts on the horizon, conditions remain calm and orderly heading into summer.

Watch our May Market Insights for the latest data and analysis.

Healthy inventory levels continued to absorb the relatively muted level of demand in Metro Vancouver’s housing market in May, keeping price trends across all housing types relatively flat month-over-month.

While detached home sales edged up and attached home sales remained relatively steady, slower apartment sales weighed on overall market activity.
