It’s a fair concern.
People move here worried life on Vancouver Island will feel slow. It’s slower, but not smaller.
Victoria itself is a small to mid-size city. One Costco, one of everything, really.
But the second you start looking outward from here, that’s where it actually gets interesting. Most people moving from Vancouver or the mainland picture island life as fewer options, less to do, nowhere to go.
I thought the same thing before I moved.
What nobody tells you is how much is actually within reach once you’re here.
Here’s what’s you’ll have access to:
🏝️ The Gulf Islands: seven major islands in the southern Strait of Georgia, including Salt Spring and Pender, all a ferry ride away
🏄♂️ Tofino: some of the best beaches and sunsets in Canada, a few hours across the island
🏔️ San Juan Islands and the Olympic Peninsula: visible on a clear day from parts of the island (also accessible by ferry)
🚠 Whistler and Squamish: a few hours north, plus a ferry crossing
🌆 Vancouver: 90 minutes away when you want the city energy
The ferry logistics are real, and they take some planning. But most families figure out a rhythm fast, and what they get in exchange is a lot more coastline, mountains, and islands than they had before.
Slower pace doesn’t mean less life.
It just means you get to choose when to speed things up.
