Yes, it’s that time of year at Point Pelee – Stable Fly season. This species loves to feast on people, mainly from the knees down and during the summer and fall, they can be numerous in the park. Here are some helpful pointers to make your visit bite-free:
1. Wear or pack long pants and closed toe shoes– it’s the best defense against a bite!
2. Check the weather conditions. Stable flies breed on dead vegetation in the agricultural fields north of the park. On the right wind, just like Monarchs and birds, they are blown into the park and funnelled to the Tip. If you see N or NE in the weather forecast, there will likely be flies in the park that day.
3. Stick to the Marsh Boardwalk. If you’ve arrived on a bad fly day, you should find some relief on the Marsh Boardwalk. On days when the flies are bad at the Tip, you are almost guaranteed a fly free experience at the marsh.
