Every correction costs. 🚜

Rework costs more than time.

⛽ Extra fuel
⏱️ Extra machine hours
🚚 Extra material to move and haul
👷 Crews and machines waiting
📐 Additional surveying and checks

For contractors working on fixed-price projects, those costs matter because doing more work does not necessarily mean getting paid more.

On Total NSA’s motorway project in Romania, the design required 0.4 m of material to be stripped. On the manually graded section, excavation went up to 30 cm deeper than planned, roughly 75% more depth than required. That meant additional material and work that were not part of the planned job, but still consumed time and resources.

With Leica 3D machine control, operators can work directly towards the digital design with guidance available in the cab. This can help reduce over-digging, repeated checks, unnecessary machine passes, and the rework that follows.

Less unnecessary work. Better control of costs. More protection for your margin.

Jürgen Mayer has spent 27 years at Leica Geosystems, and has seen quite a few changes in surveying and laser scanning along the way. He joined The Geoholics Podcast to talk about the series, how laser scanning has changed over the years and why software is becoming increasingly important on connected jobsites.

There’s also a look behind the scenes at how new products are developed and what it takes to turn an idea into something useful for customers. Watch the full episode here 👉🏼 https://hxgn.biz/3VyWiTt

3 Signs rework is slowing your job 🚜

Rework does not always look like a big mistake. Sometimes, it is hidden in the small things happening every day on site. A machine stops for another depth check. Material gets moved, then moved again. Or the operator makes one more pass “just to be safe”.

Here are three signs to watch for, and how Leica Geosystems' 3D machine control can help:

1️⃣ Repeated checks
Instead of relying only on repeated external measurements, the operator can work with the digital design available in the cab and see guidance towards the target while working.

2️⃣ Material moved twice
Working directly to the model helps the operator understand where the planned surface is, reducing guesswork that can lead to over-digging and corrective work.

3️⃣ Unnecessary passes
Clearer guidance towards the target can give operators greater confidence in the grade and help reduce the need to go over the same area again.

On a motorway project in Romania, manual grading resulted in sections being excavated up to 30 cm too deep, compared with staying within ±2 cm of the design using Leica Geosystems' 3D machine control. Less checking. Less correcting. More time moving the job forward.

Move Dirt. Not Rework.

The grade is already in the machine. 🚜

Give the operator the target where it matters most: inside the dozer.

Leica Geosystems' 3D machine control brings the digital design into the machine, providing operators with the guidance they need to work directly towards the target grade.

With 3D positioning and CoPilot blade automation, the system helps operators control the blade and work towards the planned surface with greater confidence: reducing reliance on external markers and repeated manual checks.

And this is already happening on real jobsites. On a motorway project in Romania, a Caterpillar D5 equipped with Leica iGD3 used a twin GNSS antenna set-up to guide the blade as it worked towards the design.

The target is set. The grade is in the machine.

Before / After: finished grade. 🚜

Sometimes, the clearest way to see the difference is to look at the ground.
On a motorway project in Romania, conventional manual grading and Leica Geosystems' 3D machine control were compared under the same site conditions. The manually graded section was excavated up to 30 cm too deep. With Leica Geosystems' 3D machine control, the graded section stayed within ±2 cm of the design. Working closer to the target can help reduce unnecessary corrections and material movement, while giving operators greater confidence in the grade as they work.

Less measuring. More digging. Save time. 🚜

An excavator should be digging, not constantly stopping for measurements and checks. With 3D machine control, the digital design is available in the cab, giving operators the information they need to work towards the target as they dig. This can mean fewer interruptions for repeated checks and less reliance on traditional staking and measuring throughout the job. Operators can stay focused on moving material while working with clearer guidance towards the planned surface.

For contractors such as Cheval Group, connecting digital project information with the work happening in the field helps create a more efficient way of working.

Less stopping. Less guesswork. More time digging.
