Cocoa farmers and their communities face several complex challenges, including:

Productivity: limited knowledge of farming techniques, limited access to planting materials, pests and disease

Environmental: climate change, deforestation, aging trees, unfertile soil

Social: lack of access to quality education, risk of child labor, gender inequality, fewer leadership roles for women

Financial: risk of poverty, lack of access to finance

ST Cocoa Life and Forest Initiative Progress Report works with partners to help address those challenges by helping to lift the people and protect the landscapes where cocoa grows

The cocoa Harvesting periods is the most enjoyable to farmers, the cocoa pods are harvested and gathered. Its a labour entensive exercise but as Africans we work in a community were labour is rational during the Harvesting periods. Food and drinks are provided by the farm owners, its and enjoyable periods in all cocoa farming communities in Cameroon. The major problem in the sector ranging from climate change and price, farmers are price taker. cocoa pods are ready for harvesting when they turn a deep yellow color. Farmers use machetes and long steel instruments, such as the "go-to-hell" knife with a long handle, to cut pods from trees. The pods are split apart with solid sticks and a machete to release the seeds.

Cocoa is affected by a range of pests and diseases, with some estimates putting losses as high as 30% to 40% of global production.most common is the black pod deases. Black pod disease, caused by Phytophthora species, is among the main limiting factors of cacao. It infects pods, flower cushions, young vegetative shoots, stems and roots of cocoa trees.How ever Recommendations for the use of fungicides to control black pod involve the spraying of copper or copper + metalaxyl (Ridomil plus 72)Nodox, etc every 3 weeks resulting in 8 or more applications in a growing season.
