Farrah is our current foster at Casa Mauka. She alternates between patrol dog and princess. Never passes up a raw hide or roll of TP to entertain herself when she thinks the humans don’t give her enough attention. Definitely epitomizes the Pura Vida attitude. Thank you for sharing this angel with us.

Our first overnight house guest. Fostering Indigo for the next few weeks while she waits for her furever family. She is a puppy rescued off the streets and still growing into her ears. So far she has survived being hit by a car, bitten by a snake, having her leg amputated and a blood transfusion. At Casa Mauka she only needs to survive be spoiled a little, loved alot and maybe some high level math lessons.

Floated around in the think tank a little while today(you might know it as a swimming pool) It was peaceful without the quiet. kinda like peanut butter without the jelly…or shoes without socks- just the right amount of familiarity but still edgy. Came up with new nickname for Casa Mauka: the sweet spot. The perfect space between the inescapably quiet and blustery mountain top- where the view of the ocean is spectacular but getting down to it is a chore - and the beachside stillness- where you are mere steps from the ocean .. and your nearest neighbors. Casa Mauka is on the hill but down low enough to make it a quick walk to the beach. No neighbors in sight but within earshot of the hustle bustle of daily life below. A sweet spot indeed.

One great thing about Nosara this time of year is that it rains with purpose. One of the not so great things about Nosara this time of year is that … it rains with purpose- and if you do not properly redirect the runoff then the erosion can be very destructive. Nothing that can’t be mitigated with a few hundred ground stabilizing plants and hours of back breaking work digging them in around the runoff areas. Lemongrass, citronella, limoncello all very effective. Moving on to b***y trapping the entrance to the secret Batcave. Intruders beware!

OBGT ( Our Beautiful/Beloved/Bountiful Guanacaste Tree) now identifies as furniture in Casa Mauka, having recently transitioned into a dining table, two benches, two couches, three shower seats, four pool chaise lounge chairs and a platform bed. Previously OBGT was a majestic old growth tree that shaded the upper build lot and had awesome vines the boys swung on over the quebrada- but OBGT was struck by lightning and had to be “repurposed.” Her beauty and function have been preserved. Long live OBGT.

On day 459 of the build project there were working pool lights! We celebrate all milestones at Casa Mauka regardless of how big, small or delayed. Progress is progress. It may still be untreated swamp water but it lights up pretty!

When the jungle tries to eat your board shorts and you have to take extreme measures to rescue them. Happy to report both are safely out of the tree.

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. Old concrete floor in great room had to be re-poured/sanded/sealed. New doors, door handles and lights. Table, benches and sofa made from our Guanacaste tree were delivered. Blue pebblecrete going in lower pool between rain storms. Enjoying some time in Pelada tidal pools and making pottery at .nosara. Got to see Garth and Maryluz get married on the beach at sunset- very cool.

When duty fees in Costa Rica make imported appliances crazy expensive, it was actually a better (and smarter) choice to have our refrigerator and freezer custom made in San Jose. Thanks Gustavo and for the great customer service. Excited to see them installed next week.
