On this side of Costa Rica the sun comes up over the water.

By six in the morning, the sky over the Caribbean turns pink, and the fishing boats are already out. Most people here are awake for it either way, because the howler monkeys start calling before the light arrives. Every beach on this coast has its own personality, and about fifteen minutes of road separates them all.

Playa Negra runs dark and volcanic right at the edge of Puerto Viejo. Head south and the surf picks up at Cocles, where most of the crowd lands by midday. At Punta Uva the water calms into clear turquoise, warm enough to spend a whole afternoon in. Manzanillo sits at the end of the road, quiet, with the wildlife refuge starting where the sand runs out.
