WHO WERE THE GUANCHES? 🌴
The Guanches were the original people of Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands. Their history is a fascinating mix of mystery, resilience, and a deep connection to their land.
Where Did They Come From?
The Guanches are thought to have descended from the Berbers of North Africa, arriving on the islands over 1,000 years ago. Once here, they developed a unique culture, shaped by their isolation in the middle of the Atlantic.
How Did They Live?
The Guanches lived in caves and stone shelters, farming crops like barley and raising goats and sheep.
Mount Teide held spiritual significance for them, and they believed it was the home of powerful deities.
The Guanches practiced mummification, which shows their belief in an afterlife.
Tribes and Leaders
Tenerife was divided into nine tribal kingdoms, each ruled by a leader known as a "mencey." These tribes had their own lands but shared many cultural traditions.
What Happened to Them?
When the Spanish arrived in the late 1400s, the Guanches fought fiercely to defend their homeland. Sadly, they were eventually defeated, not just by superior weapons but also by diseases like smallpox. Over time, their language and many of their traditions faded, but their influence remains.
Their Legacy Today
The Guanches’ story is a proud part of Tenerife’s identity. Their cultural influence can be seen in Canarian festivals, sports like Canarian wrestling, and archaeological treasures across the islands.
Tenerife’s history is much more than beaches, beer and sunshine – it’s a story of the Guanches, the first islanders who called it home.!
